This is an article on how to tell when others have read your messages on iMessage, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Use iMessage

1. 

   Make sure the person you send the message to also uses iMessage. This is the only way to see if they've seen your message.
   • If the outgoing message is blue, the recipient can receive the iMessage message.
   • If the outgoing message is green, the recipient is using a phone or tablet that doesn't have the iMessage widget (usually Android operating system). In this scenario, you will not be notified when the recipient has read your message.

   Turn on the mode of sending read reports. When you and your contact both have this mode turned on, both parties will know when each other's messages have been read. If only you have this mode enabled, the contact will know when you have read their message, but you don't know when they've read your message. Here's how to turn on read notifications:
   • Open the app Settings (Settings) of iPhone.
   • Swipe down below the screen and select Messages (Message).
   • Push the “Send Read Receipts” slider to the green On position.

   Internet connection. You can only send iMessage messages over the internet, so make sure the device has a Wi-Fi or mobile data connection. If you do not have a network, you can only send regular text messages and will not be notified when the message has been read.

   Open a messaging app with a white chat frame icon on a green background, usually visible below the home screen.

   Compose or reply to a message. Make sure you see “iMessage” in the data entry. That means you're connected to the internet, and the recipient can receive iMessage messages.

   Send Message. When you send an iMessage message, you'll see the word “Delivered” below the message once it's been sent.

   Wait to see read announcement. If the recipient has turned on read notifications, you'll see the word "Read" below the message. advertisement

Method 2 of 3: Use WhatsApp

1. 

   Open the WhatsApp app on your iPhone or iPad with a white and green chat frame icon with a white phone icon inside. If you send messages on WhatsApp, the read notifications are displayed automatically. That means by default you will know when your message has been read.

   Create new or reply to existing messages.

3. 

   Touch the Send button. It's a blue round button with a white paper plane icon inside.

4. 

   See the check mark icon in the lower right corner of sent messages.
   • When the message has been sent but not yet received, you will see a gray check mark. That means the recipient hasn't opened WhatsApp since you sent the message.
   • If the recipient has opened WhatsApp since you sent the message but hasn't read your message, you'll see two gray ticks.
   • After the recipient reads your message, the two checkmarks will turn blue.

Method 3 of 3: Use Facebook Messenger

1. 

   Open the Facebook Messenger app on your iPhone or iPad. It's a blue and white chat frame icon with a lightning bolt icon inside, usually displayed on the home screen of the device. By default, Messenger will automatically let you know when the recipient has read your message.

2. 

   Touch the name of the person you want to send the message to. This will open a conversation between you and that person.

3. 

   Compose a message and tap the Send button. It's a blue paper plane icon in the lower right corner of the message.

4. 

   Check the status of the message.
   • A blue check mark in a white circle means you have successfully sent the message, but the recipient has not opened Messenger yet.
   • A white check mark in a blue circle means that person has opened Messenger since you sent the message, but they haven't read the message.
   • When recipient's profile picture appears in a small circle below the message, it means the message has been read.
