This wikiHow teaches you how to troubleshoot problems with the Internet. While some network problems can only be handled by your service provider, there are steps you can take to fix small to medium network problems at home.

Method 1 of 2: Simple fix

   > click System Preferences ... (System Customization)> click Network (Network)> select Assist Me ... (Help me)> click Diagnostics (Diagnosis)> follow the instructions on the screen.

   Increase Wi-Fi signal. If your problem is related to network signal then noise and distance is the main cause. There are many things you can do to limit interference and increase the network's range:
   • Add a second router to extend the range.
   • Increase your computer's Wi-Fi reception.
   • DIY directional "antenna" for Wi-Fi adapter.

   Scan for viruses and malware. Viruses and other malicious computer viruses can interfere with your ability to connect to the network. You can regularly remove viruses with specialized software on your computer.

   Contact your internet service provider. If all of the above methods fail then this is the best way left. Please explain to the operator about the specific error you encountered and ask the staff to come check.
   • Note: you need to be as calm and polite as possible, don't show your discomfort at the company.

• Most network service providers will conduct diagnostics and repairs for free if you are using their modem / router for the duration of the contract.

Warning

• Network reset should be the last ditch effort to fix the problem. While this method is capable of fixing most of the problems that may occur with the network, it would be very inconvenient to have to reset all Internet-connected devices.
