This wiki page will show you different ways to change column names in Google Sheets on a computer. You can edit the name used to reference the column in the formula or rename the column header name.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Change the name of a range of cells (Named Range)

  1. Access https://sheets.google.com in a web browser. If you're not signed in to your Google account, follow the onscreen instructions to sign in now.
    • Use this method to create or edit a name that represents a range (for example, "Budget" instead of "D1: E10",) that you can use to reference it in a formula.
    • To change the name that appears in the header at the top of the column, refer to this method.

  2. Click the file you want to edit.
  3. Click a column letter. This is the letter on the column you want to name. The entire column will be selected.

  4. Click on the menu Data (Data). This section is at the top of Sheets.
  5. ClickNamed ranges (Range name). The “Named ranges” table will appear on the right side of the worksheet.

  6. Enter a name for the range of cells. The range name cannot begin with a number or the words "true" or "false". A name can be up to 250 characters long, and includes letters, numbers, and underscores.
    • If the field is empty, just enter a name for the range.
    • If the range already has a name and you want to change the name, tap the pencil icon, then enter a new name.
  7. Press Done (Accomplished). The column / range names are currently being updated. If there are formulas that reference old names, you will need to update them. advertisement

Method 2 of 2: Change the column header

  1. Access https://sheets.google.com in a web browser. If you're not signed in to your Google account, follow the onscreen instructions to sign in now.
    • The column header is the text that appears at the top of each column.
    • If you've never created column headers, check out.
  2. Click the file you want to edit.
  3. Double-click the column heading you want to change.
  4. Use ← Backspace or Delete to delete the current name.
  5. Enter a new name.
  6. Press ↵ Enter or ⏎ Return. Column names are now updated. advertisement
