   Need to know the phone number where you are calling. This is the personal or business landline number or the mobile phone number of the person you need to call.    • If you call a cell phone number in Japan, you dial 90 after the country code and before the area code. For example, to call a mobile number in Fukuyama from Vietnam, you would dial 00-81-90-XXXX-XXXX.

Part 2 of 2: Making Calls

   Determine the current time in Japan. It is important to keep in mind that the current time in Japan will most likely not coincide with the time where you are calling. The time zone of Japan is Japan Standard Time, which is 9 hours faster than Greenwich Mean Time.
   • Remember that you may still have to pay for international calls even if there is no person picking up on the other end. That means you need to make sure you call the other person while they're awake.

2. 

   Make a call and dial the full international number. To illustrate, for example, you are calling a friend who lives in Fukuyama, Japan and you live in Hanoi, Vietnam. You will dial the number as follows:
   • Vietnam's exit code: 00
   • Country code of Japan: 81
   • Fukuyama's area code: 84
   • Dial the seven-digit phone number: XXX-XXXX
   • The full number will be 00-81-84-XXX-XXXX.

3. 

   If someone answers "し も し" (moshi moshi - alô) then congratulations! You have successfully made a call to Japan. advertisement

• The cost of making direct international calls is extremely expensive in all countries. But you also have more economical options such as: International calling card, subscribing to the international calling program of your carrier, Internet calling programs like Skype, or callback service.
• Remember to always ignore the leading zero before calling Japan from abroad. Although all landline numbers in Japan have 10 numbers and 11 mobile numbers, you only need to dial 9 or 10 numbers after you've entered the exit code and country code to make the call.
