The iPhone has a Voice Memos app that lets us record and edit our voice recordings. You can use it to record your own voice, record lecture content, and so on. After you record the memo, you can trim it to get rid of the paragraphs that have no speech or important information. You can also share recordings by sending files via email or messaging applications.

Steps

Part 1 of 4: Sending audio messages on Messages

  1. Open the Messages messaging app. You can quickly send voice messages to iMessage contacts using the Messages app.

  2. Open a conversation. You need to talk to an iMessage user before you can send voice messages. Check your chat messages and the title bar, if they're green, you can't chat via iMessage. If it is blue, you can start sending voice messages.

  3. Press and hold on the microphone button next to the iMessage field. This button appears only when you are chatting with a specific iMessage user.
  4. Record the voice message while holding down the microphone button. Just long press this button, you can record for as long as you like.

  5. Swipe your finger to the Send button to send. The voice message will be immediately sent to the other person. If you want to cancel, release your finger and tap the "X" next to the recording. advertisement

Part 2 of 4: Record a voice memo

  1. Open the Voice Memos app, usually located in the "Extras" folder on the home screen. The app has a sound graph icon on a white background.
    • You can also hold down the Home key to start Siri and say "Record a voice memo" to start the app.
  2. Click the Record button to start recording. The sound will be immediately recorded using the iPhone's microphone. The closer you place your phone to the source of the sound, the clearer the sound quality will be.
    • You will get better recordings if you use the Apple earbuds with the microphone built in to the wire. When recording on iPod Touch, you will need to use these headphones as the iPod Touch does not have microphone.
    • Phone cases can interfere with the microphone. You should remove your iPhone from the case for the best recording.
  3. Click the Record button again to pause recording. You can pause and learn as many times as you want.
  4. Click "Done" after recording is finished to save. You will be prompted to name the recording. After entering a name, press "Save" to save the file to the voice memo list.
    • There is no real limit to the duration, but the iPhone may run out of memory if the recording is too long. Basically, each minute of recording is 480 KB, which means an hour long recording will be about 30 MB.

Part 3 of 4: Cut a voice memo

  1. Click to open a recording in the Voice Memos list. You will see this list when you start the Voice Memos application. You can trim recordings to remove unnecessary segments or split a long file into sections.
  2. Click the "Edit" button below the voice memo. This button appears only after you have selected a recording.
  3. Click the blue frame to open Trim mode. Red bars will appear at the end of each recording.
  4. Drag the red bars to set a new starting and ending point for the recording. You can click and drag each bar to change the starting and ending positions. Use this to get rid of the silent pieces at the beginning or the end of a recording, or to select the part of the sound you want to create a new file.
    • You can cut multiple times to get the desired results. For example, you cut once to get rid of the silent segment at the beginning, then trim again to get rid of the silent segment at the end of the recording. You can then trim a portion of the recording to create a new file.
  5. Click "Trim" after finishing setting the new starting and ending points. You will be prompted to create a new record from the cut, or overwrite the original.
    • If you choose to save a new one, the audio you selected with the Trim tool will become a new file, and the original will remain unchanged.
    • If you choose to overwrite the original file, only what you set up with the Trim tool will be retained.
