The experience of playing video games on PS4 is fun, but sometimes developers need to fix bugs and fix problems in their games. The best way is to set up automatic downloads for the game to perform updates in the background or when the PS4 is in standby mode. You can also update the game manually, just select the game and download and install the update.

Method 1 of 2: Set up automatic updates

1. 

   Turn on the PS4 by pressing the button located in the center of the controller. Click this button again if additional screens prompts you to do so. On the next screen ask "Who is using this controller?" (Who is using this controller?), Select your user profile and press the “X” button.

   Press up on the console and scroll to the “settings” screen. The install button is white and orange with the small toolbox logo in the circle. This button is located between the power options and the title menu. Use the 4-way D-pad or the left button to navigate to the setting option, then press the “X” button on the gaming controller to access the menu.

   Scroll down on the menu options to the “system” section. The "system" option is between "accessibility" and "initialisation". Press the “X” button on the console to access the system menu.

   Scroll down to the “automatic downloads and uploads” section. This is the second menu item, located between “system information” and “voice operation settings”. Press the “X” button on the handle to access this menu.

   Check the box "application update files". After you press the “X” button on the controller to select “application update files”, the application and game will be automatically updated. The "application update files" option will be located between the "saved data" and "install automatically" options.

   Go to the “power settings” menu. Press the “O” button on the console twice to return to the “settings” menu screen, then scroll down to the “power settings” option with a small white logo showing hands holding the battery. After you scroll to the “power settings” option, press the “X” button on the console to access this menu.

   Set up which features you want to have when the machine is idle. Select the second menu option “set functions available in rest mode” (set functions available when the machine is in sleep mode). This option allows the game to perform updates even when the PS4 is idle. If you play remotely, you can choose to add the "enable turning on of PS4 from network" feature (allows PS4 to be enabled from the network).

Method 2 of 2: Manually update the game

1. 

   Select the app you want to update from the main menu. After turning on your PS4 and accessing your account, use the D-pad key or the left button to navigate to the game you want to update.

   Check for updates through the options menu. After navigating to the game that needs updating, press the option buttons on the controller. Scroll down to the “check for update” item in the pop-up menu.

3. 

   Go to game updates (if available). If an update is available for the game, you will get the message: “An update file for this application is available”. Then the system will prompt you to go to the file download screen. Please press the “X” button on the controller to access the screen.
   • If the game doesn't need an update yet, the PS4 will notify you.

   Select the game and start downloading. On the download screen, a complete list of available app and game updates will appear. Select the game you want to update by pressing the "X" button on the controller, then confirm the decision to update the game.
   • This process takes time. The time it takes to complete the installation process will depend on the size of the update file.
