This article shows you how to update your Android tablet operating system.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Update your tablet via Wi-Fi

1. 

   Connect the tablet to Wi-Fi. Do this by sliding the top of the screen and clicking the Wi-Fi button.
   • If the device does not connect automatically, select the Wi-Fi connection and enter the password if available.
   • Updating Android via Wi-Fi is the most common simple way.

   Go to the Settings section of your tablet. The item is usually gear-shaped (⚙️) but it can also be an application that looks like sliders.

   Click General (General). The card is above the screen.

   Scroll down and click About Device (About Equipment). This item is near the bottom of the menu.

   Click Update (Update). The item is at the top of the menu, and depending on the current Android version it will be called "Software Update" or "System Firmware Update".

   Click Check for Updates (Check for updates). The tablet will look for available system updates.
   • Each Android version is suitable for each device. Your tablet will only find the version of the update that integrates with the device.

   Click Update. If an updated version is available, this button will appear above the menu.

   Click Install (Setting). The button is also called "Reboot and Install" or "Install System Software". This step begins the download and installation process.

Method 2 of 3: Update tablets using computer

1. 

   Visit the tablet manufacturer's official website using a computer browser. Then follow the link to the support and download page.
   • You may need to enter detailed device information or register your tablet to access the software update version.

   Download and install device management software. Each manufacturer's software has different names and functions.
   • For example, Samsung device management software might be called "Kies," while Motorola is "MDM," and so on.

   Go back to the tablet manufacturer's official website. Then go back to the support page and download.

   Find updated version available. These updates are available as a download file that you can install using the device management software of the manufacturer.

   Connect the tablet to the computer. Use the device cable. Usually this is a USB to micro USB cable.

   Open the device manager app.

   Find the update command. Commands usually appear in a tab or drop-down menu along the top of the screen.
   • In Kies, for example, the command is below the "Tools" drop-down menu.

Method 3 of 3: Unlocking the tablet

1. 

   Device backup. Do this step in case you want to recover the jailbreak later.
   • Unlock allows you to install an Android version that is not compatible with the device.
   • The manufacturer version of Android is usually limited. Then you cannot install the program that is not suitable for your tablet. In case the Android version is incompatible with your device, backing up allows you to restore your device's original factory mode setting.

2. 

   Find jailbreak software online. Use the browser on your computer to find unlocking software designed for use with your particular tablet family.

3. 

   Download the software. Follow the instructions on the screen to download and install the jailbreak software to your computer.

4. 

   Connect the tablet to the computer. Use the device cable. Usually this is a USB to micro USB cable.

5. 

   Open the jailbreak software.

6. 

   Begin the jailbreak process. Follow the command on the screen in the jailbreak software to complete the process.
   • If the software does not have instructions, you can find instructions on how to unlock your tablet online.

Advice

• The jailbreak update works the same way you would when updating your tablet by connecting to your computer and using the software and Android version you want to install.
• Always back up your tablet data to your google account or computer before updating Android.

Warning

• Unlocking is void of warranty for your tablet.
• Cracking allows you to update to any Android version, but the updated versions that are incompatible with the model will cause the tablet to function slowly or damage.
• Tablet hardware cannot be updated, so you cannot update your tablet beyond a certain Android version.
