This wikiHow page shows how to convert a Notepad (.txt) file to a Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) document in Windows 10.

Steps

1. 

   Open Microsoft Excel. A quick way to open Microsoft Excel is to type excel go to the Windows search bar and click on Microsoft Excel.

   Click on the menu File (File). This item is in the upper left corner of Excel.

   Press Open (Open).

   Choose Text files (Text file) from the drop-down menu.

   Select the text file you want to convert and press Open (Open). This will open the Text Import Wizard.

   Select the data type and press next (Next). In the ″ Original data type ″ section, select Delimited (Split) (if the text file contains comma-separated data, a tab, or some other method) or Fixed width(Fixed width) (if the data is aligned in columns with spaces between each field).

   Select the separator or field width and press next (Next).
   • If you choose Delimited (Split) on the previous screen, check the box next to the icon (or ″ Space ″ if it's separated by a space) used to separate the data fields.
   • If you choose Fixed width (Fixed width) on the previous screen, follow the on-screen instructions to organize the data properly.

   Select the column data format. Select the option in ″ Column data format ″ that best describes the data in columns (for example: Text (Document),Date (Day)).

9. 

   Press finish (Finish). The ″ Save As ″ window appears.

10. 

    Choose Excel Workbook ( *. Xlsx) (Excel workbook) from the menu ″ Save As ″ (Save As). This item is at the bottom of the window.

11. 

    Name the file and press Save (Save). Notepad text file is currently saved as an Excel workbook (Excel workbook). advertisement
