This wikiHow teaches you how to use Adobe Photoshop to convert JPEG images into vector line drawings.

Steps

  1. Open Adobe Photoshop on your computer. Application is in section All Apps Windows Start menu (or folder Applications on macOS).

  2. Click the menu File (File). The option is near the top left corner of the screen.
  3. Click Open ... (Open). The file browser on your computer will appear.

  4. Go to the folder containing the JPEG file.

  5. Select the JPEG file. Click a file name to select it.

  6. Click Open. The JPEG file will open for you to edit in Photoshop.

  7. Click the Quick Selection tool. This option has a dotted circle icon below the brush. If your Photoshop is an older version, this will be a dotted line with a pencil icon.
  8. Click the Add to Selection button. This option is in the icon bar at the top of the screen and looks similar to the Quick Selection tool icon, different in that it adds a plus sign (+) above it.
    • Hover the mouse pointer over each icon to display the features of that tool.

  9. Click the parts of the image that you want to convert to vector. Each zone you click on will be surrounded by a dashed line.
  10. Click the menu window at the top of the screen.
  11. Click Paths (Path). The Paths window will open in the lower right corner of Photoshop.
  12. Click the "Make work from path" button located at the bottom of the Paths window. This option has a dotted square icon with smaller squares on four sides, fourth from left. The selected areas will be converted to vector.
  13. Click the menu File in the upper left corner of the screen.
  14. Click Export (Export).
  15. Click Paths to Illustrator. This option is near the bottom of the menu.
  16. Enter a name for the paths and click OK. Your computer's file browser will appear.
  17. Go to the folder where you want to save the vector.
  18. Enter a name for the file.
  19. Click Save (Save). The vector image is saved. Now you can edit in Illustrator or any other vector editing app. advertisement
