This wikiHow teaches you how to turn regular TV into an Internet-connected media center. To do this, you need a smart media player - such as an Apple TV or an Amazon Fire Stick - and an HDMI port behind the TV. If the TV doesn't have an HDMI port, you can purchase an HDMI-to-RCA adapter that plugs into the red, yellow, and white ports on the back of the TV.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: By Apple TV

1. 

   Find the HDMI port of the TV. The HDMI port looks like a thin, flat slot with a slightly tapered bottom, usually located behind or on the side of the TV screen.
   • Make sure to note the number next to the HDMI port as this is the channel you need to use your Apple TV.
   • If the TV doesn't have any HDMI ports, you can purchase an HDMI-to-RCA adapter that plugs into the red, yellow, and white ports on the side or back of the TV.

   Purchase an HDMI cable. HDMI cables of various lengths are available online or at electronics stores.
   • HDMI cables sold online are usually cheaper than they are outside a store.

   Place the Apple TV box near the TV. The Apple TV box should be located near the TV so that the HDMI cable and power cord can connect to the device.

Method 2 of 3: Using an Amazon Fire TV Stick

   • If the TV is close to the wall or there is not enough space for the Fire Stick, plug the HDMI extension cable that came with the Fire Stick to the TV, then plug the Fire Stick into the other end of the extension cable.

   Insert the power cable. Plug the end of the USB cable into the charging case, then pull the power cord straight from the charging case.

   Plug in the Fire Stick. Plug one end of the cable into the port on the side of the Fire Stick, the other end you plug into an electrical outlet.

   Insert the battery into the Fire Stick's remote. You need to insert two AAA batteries into the Fire Stick's battery tray.

   Turn on the TV. Press the TV's power button.

   Connect the power USB cable. Plug one end of the cable into the Chromecast box, and the other end plug into the USB port on the TV.
   • If the TV doesn't have a USB port, you'll need to use a power adapter with a USB cable to plug into a power outlet.
   • With the 4K version of Chromecast, you'll need to use a wall outlet as the USB port cannot power this Chromecast model.

4. 

   Turn on the TV. Press the TV's power button.

   Open Google Home. Tap the Google Home app with the house icon with red, yellow, green and blue borders.

   Click ACCEPT (Accept) when the option appears. You will go to the Google Home homepage.

   Click on the icon Devices (Device) in the upper right corner of the phone screen.
   • On an iPhone, you need to first tap Use without Bluetooth (Use with Bluetooth), then tap Skip Setup (Skip setting) to go to the homepage of the Google Home app.

10. 

    Wait for Chromecast to detect your phone. Once discovered, a confirmation message will appear on your phone.

11.

Warning

• Older TVs with only A / V cables (such as red, yellow, and white cables) cannot be converted to a smart TV.
• Older TVs with only a coax input (the port you plug the TV cable into) cannot switch to a smart TV.
