With wigs, extensions and other types of synthetic hair, you can beautifully spice up your style without having to change your natural hair. However, because synthetic hair is artificial, you will need to use a special cleaning method to keep the hair soft. When the hair is clean, you can use a few techniques to ensure that it stays healthy.

To step

Part 1 of 4: Shampooing synthetic hair

  1. Detangle the hair with a wide tooth comb. Unlike a fine comb, a wide tooth comb is less likely to catch on loose hair, making it perfect for detangling most synthetic wigs and extensions. If you are detangling a wig with tight curls, use your fingers instead of a comb to avoid damaging the hair. If you are not successful in combing the hair, spray it with water or a wigs detangling agent to loosen the hair.
  2. Mix cold water with shampoo in a bowl. Fill a tub or bucket with enough cold or lukewarm water to submerge all of the hair. Then add one or two caps of mild synthetic hair shampoo. Use a little more for a large wig and a little less for small extensions. Mix the water with the shampoo to get a light foaming mixture.
  3. Let the wig soak in the bowl for five to ten minutes. Make sure the hair is completely untangled and then put the wig in the bowl. Push the wig under water until it is completely submerged and let it soak for five to ten minutes. The shampoo helps to remove dirt and dust from the hair so that the hair is cleaner and easier to soften.
  4. Stir the wig into the water to get the hair moving. While the wig is soaking, stir it in the water, push it up and down and move it from side to side. Make gentle movements so that the hair does not get tangled.Do not rub or pull on the hair as this can damage or even loosen it.
  5. Rinse the wig with cool water. After five minutes, remove the wig from the basin and hold it under cold water. This will help rinse the shampoo without altering the shape of the wig or removing the protective films on the hair.

Part 2 of 4: Using conditioner or fabric softener

  1. Fill a tub with cold water. If you are using the same bowl that you washed the wig in, pour out the water and shampoo mixture and clean the bowl. Then fill the bowl with enough cold or lukewarm water to completely submerge the wig.
  2. Add 120 ml of conditioner or fabric softener. By using conditioner, the hair does not get tangled and it remains soft and shiny. Fabric softener makes the hair a lot softer, but does not help with knots, tangles and similar problems.
    • If you are using conditioner, look for a product that is suitable for synthetic hair.
  3. Leave the wig in the bowl for at least ten minutes. Stretch the synthetic hair completely and then place the wig in the mixture. Push the wig into the water until it is completely submerged and then let it soak for at least ten minutes. Soak a damaged wig for half an hour, an hour, or even overnight.
  4. Set the wig in motion by stirring it through the water. Just like washing, move the wig up and down and from side to side so that all hair is covered with conditioner or fabric softener. To avoid unnecessary damage, do not rub or handle the hair roughly.
    • If you let the wig soak for a long time, all you have to do is move it through the water for the first five to ten minutes.
  5. Remove the wig from the water but do not rinse the conditioner or fabric softener. When you want to dry the wig, take it out of the basin. Leave the conditioner or fabric softener residue in the hair so that the product can continue to penetrate the hair.

Part 3 of 4: Drying synthetic hair

  1. Squeeze the excess moisture from the wig. Grab a strand of synthetic hair, hold it between your thumb and forefinger, and gently squeeze it. Then slide your fingers down at the pick to get most of the rest of the moisture out. Repeat this with the rest of the wig. To avoid damaging the wig, do not twist the strands or try to wring them out.
  2. If necessary, pat the hair dry with a towel. In case of hair extensions or a wig with long hair, gently pat the hair with a clean towel. Be careful not to rub the hair with the towel to avoid damaging the hair.
  3. Air dry the wig. If it is a wig, put it on a wig stand, aerosol can or wig head. Do not use Styrofoam stand as this may damage the wig. If you want to let hair extensions dry, lay them out on a clean, flat surface.
    • Blow dryers and other hot aids can permanently change the shape of the synthetic wig, so don't use them if possible.

Part 4 of 4: Taking care of synthetic hair

  1. Use hair care products intended for synthetic hair. Since synthetic hair is not made from the same materials as human hair, you must use different products to keep hair soft and clean. Look for shampoos, conditioners, and other hair care products specifically designed for synthetic hair or wigs. If you can't find these products in the supermarket, go to a drugstore or wig store.
    • Never use normal hair care products on wigs and extensions. This is especially true for hairspray, because hairspray can strongly affect synthetic hair.
  2. Comb synthetic hair with a wide tooth comb. Use a wide tooth comb or brush to detangle the synthetic hair so that the teeth or bristles do not catch on the synthetic hair. If possible, buy a special wig comb designed for styling wigs. To avoid ruining your wig, start by combing at the ends and then work your way up to the roots.
  3. Don't wash the wig too often. Synthetic hair, unlike human hair, does not get greasy due to sebum, which means you can wash it less often. If you wear the synthetic wig every day, wash it about once a week. Otherwise, wash it about once a month to keep the hair soft.
  4. Use hair care products as little as possible. Synthetic hair can weaken and roughen over time if you use too many hair care products. To prevent this from happening, only use shampoos, conditioners and shine sprays intended for synthetic hair. Do not use gels and similar products unless they are specially formulated for the type of wig or hair extensions you have. Use as little of a styling product as possible to avoid damaging the wig.
  5. Do not expose synthetic hair to very high temperatures. This also applies to hot water and warm aids such as hair dryers, curling irons and flat irons. Very high temperatures will change the shape of the wig and permanently damage the hair unless the wig is made of heat resistant fibers.
  6. Take off the synthetic wig at night. While sleeping, the shape and texture of your synthetic wig can be completely ruined. To avoid this, take off your wig and loosen your extensions before going to sleep. Place a wig on a wig stand and place extensions on a flat surface. If your extensions are sewn on and cannot be removed, sleep on a satin pillowcase or braid the extensions before going to sleep.
