Brita water filter jugs are a great way to reduce various contaminants that can be in potable tap water. Brita water filter jugs don't need much special care other than not putting them in the dishwasher. It is also important to use a mild, non-abrasive detergent when washing. Clean your jug ​​in the sink with hot water and a soft cloth or sponge.

Part 1 of 2: Disassembling the water filter jug

1. Remove the lid and wash it off. Remove the lid and wash it in the sink with hot water and your basic dish soap. Wipe it off with a washcloth or sponge, making sure to get into the crevices of the lid as best you can. Do not allow any electronics in the lid to be submerged in water.
   • For Brita water filter jugs with a chrome lid: mix a teaspoon of vinegar in a cup of warm water and gently wipe the lid with a soft cloth dipped in the water.
2. Remove the filter and set it aside. The filter does not need to be washed, but rinse with warm water if desired. Place the filter on a clean surface so that you do not pollute it.
3. Remove and wash the reservoir. If there is one, take the water tank out of the jug and put it in the sink. Use a mild dish soap and warm water and wipe the reservoir with a soft cloth. Make sure to wipe the inside and outside of the reservoir, as well as the holder where the filter sits.

Part 2 of 2: Wash and dry the water filter

1. Wash the water filter jug ​​by hand. Wash the jug in the sink with warm soapy water. Plastic Brita water filter jugs are not made to withstand extremely hot water, so never clean your Brita filter by putting it in the dishwasher. Doing so will likely melt and warp your water filter jug, rendering it unusable.
2. Use a mild dish soap and a soft cloth. When washing the water filter jug, use a basic dish detergent that is not abrasive. Any type of detergent with mild cleansing ingredients will work fine. Instead of steel wool or other hard scrubbing surfaces, use a soft cloth or sponge.
   • Dawn, Palmolive and Joy are examples of mild soaps that are good to use.
3. Rinse the water filter jug ​​and let it dry upside down. Rinse the jug thoroughly after washing. To dry the jug, place it upside down on a drying rack or on a clean towel on your counter or table. Drying the pitcher with a towel can leave small fibers that end up in your water.
   • If you are in a hurry, you can dry the jug with a paper towel to avoid leaving fabric fibers.
