This article shows you how to edit the contents of the file winmail.dat can view. This file appears as an attachment to e-mails sent with the e-mail program Microsoft Outlook. There are several online services and mobile apps you can use to open the file. Keep in mind that the content of winmail.dat is always the same as the content of the email itself. So if you can read the email, there is no reason to open the attachment.

To step

Method 1 of 3: On a desktop computer

1. Download it winmail.datfile. You can usually do this by opening the email with the attachment, and then clicking the Download button next to or on the preview of the file.
   • You may now need to select a save location or confirm the download before you can download the file.
2. Open the website at winmail.datfiles. Go to https://www.winmaildat.com/ in your computer's web browser. This website puts you winmail.datfile to a readable RTF document that you can open in Microsoft Word (or, if you don't have Word, with another text program such as WordPad or TextEdit).
3. click on Browse. This is a gray button at the top of the page. You now open Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac).
4. Select your file. Navigate to the location of the winmail.datfile, and click to select it.
5. click on To open. This button is in the bottom right corner of the window. The file will now be uploaded to the website.
6. click on Start. This button can be found in the middle of the page. The website now converts it .Whichfile to a Rich Text Format (RTF) file.
7. click on the link messagebody. You can find this link at the top of the page. This will download the RTF file to your computer.
   • Again, you may need to choose a save location or confirm the download first.
8. Open the RTF file. Double-click the RTF file to open it with the default program. When the file is opened, you can now edit the text of winmail.dat read.

Method 2 of 3: On an iPhone

1. Download the app Winmaildat Opener. With this free app from the App Store you can winmail.datfiles on your iPhone:
   • Open the Press the home button. You now minimize the App Store and go to your home screen.
     • For iPhone X and later, press the button on the side here.
   • Open your email app. Tap the email app where you have the winmail.dat attached.
   • Open the email with the winmail.dat Appendix. You do this by tapping on the subject of the email.
   • Select the winmail.dat Appendix. Tap the attachment at the bottom of the email. You will now see an empty preview.
     • You may have to scroll down to find the attachment.
     • If the attachment already opens in Winmail.dat Opener, you can skip the next two steps.
   • Tap on it Scroll to the right and tap the button Copy to Winmaildat Opener. This option can be found on the far right of the top row of apps in the popup menu. You are now sending the file to Winmaildat Opener, which converts the file to an RTF file and then opens the app.
   • Tap the RTF file. This one is at the top of the page. You now open the RTF file. Here you can see the content of winmail.dat.

Method 3 of 3: On Android

1. Download the app Winmail.dat Opener. With this free app from the Google Play Store you can winmail.datfiles on your Android device:
   • Open the Press the home button. You can find it at the bottom of your Android device. This way you minimize the app that is open and you go to the home screen.
   • Open your email app. Tap the email app where you want the winmail.dat attached.
   • Open the email with the winmail.dat Appendix. You do this by tapping on the subject of the email.
   • Tap the winmail.dat Appendix. You will usually find this at the bottom of the e-mail. The attachment now opens in Winmail.dat Opener.
   • Tap the RTF file. This one is at the top of the page. You now open the RTF file. Here you can see the content of winmail.dat.

Tips

• If your email has other attachments that you can't open, you can edit the winmaildatwebsite to make those files readable as well.

Warnings

• If you can read the email yourself, opening a winmail.datfile unnecessary. Even if it is necessary, the layout of the message will be lost when converted to an RTF file.
