This article will show you how to turn off WhatsApp notifications on Android. You can turn off all notifications in your device's settings, or control individual options - such as the notification sound or pop-up notifications - in WhatsApp's settings.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Block all notifications

  1. Open the settings of your Android device. The Settings app usually looks like a gear or a wrench.
  2. Tap Application Manager or Apps. Open the Settings menu from the list of applications on your device. This is also the menu where you can disable or uninstall apps from your Android.
    • On most Android devices this option is called "Application Manager" or "Apps", but on some devices this name may be different.
  3. Scroll down and tap WhatsApp. You now open the page "App info" for WhatsApp.
  4. Turn off all notifications. Depending on the model and software of your device, you should deselect the "Show notifications" option or turn on the "Block notifications" switch.
    • If you see a "Notifications" menu on the page, tap it and turn on the "Block All" switch.
    • If you don't see the "Notifications" menu, find the "Show Notifications" option at the top of your screen and deselect it.
  5. Confirm your action. Some devices will now ask you if you really want to turn off notifications. In this case, tap "OK" or "Confirm" to save your changes. Now you will not see any notifications from WhatsApp on your home screen or at the top of your screen.

Method 2 of 2: Customize notification options

  1. Open WhatsApp. The WhatsApp icon looks like a green speech bubble with a white phone inside.
  2. Tap the menu button. This button looks like three dots, one above the other, in the top right corner of the WhatsApp home screen. This will open a drop-down menu.
    • When WhatsApp opens in a conversation, the menu button will show something else. In this case, tap the back button first to return to the home screen, then tap the menu button.
  3. Tap Settings. This will open the WhatsApp settings menu.
  4. Tap Notifications. This option is next to a green clock in the Settings menu. Here you can adjust all your notifications and keep only the ones you find useful.
  5. Deselect the Notification sounds option. Turn off all notification sounds by deselecting this option at the top of the menu. With this option disabled, you will no longer hear sounds when receiving and sending messages.
  6. Customize Messages notifications. Under the heading "Messages" you can adjust the options for the notification sound, vibration, popup notifications and notification LED. These options apply to all your personal conversations.
    • Tap "Notification Sound", select "Silent" and then tap "OK" to turn off the sound. Your device will now stop sounding when you get a notification.
    • Tap "Vibrate" and select "Off" to turn it off. Your device will no longer vibrate when you receive a notification.
    • Tap "Pop-up notifications" and select "No popup" to turn it off. You will now not see a pop-up notification on the home screen of your device with a new message.
    • Tap "Notification LED" and select "None" to turn it off. Your device will now not show a notification light for a new message.
  7. Scroll down and adjust the Group Messages options. There is a separate section in the menu to customize notifications for group messages. Here you have the same options as in "Messages" to adjust the settings for "Notification Sound", "Vibrate", "Pop-up Notifications" and "Notification LED".
  8. Scroll down and adjust the Calls options. You can also adjust options for the notifications for a call via WhatsApp.
    • Tap "Ringtone", select "Silent", then tap "OK". Your ringtone will now be silent, and your device will no longer make a sound for an incoming call via WhatsApp.
    • Tap "Vibrate" and select "Off" to turn it off. If you disable this option, your device will not vibrate for an incoming call via WhatsApp.
