French toast is delicious with breakfast, as a snack or as a winter dessert. You make them with slices of stale bread, eggs and milk. It may sound old-fashioned and complicated, like something only your grandmother used to make, but below you can read how you can easily make your own French toast in the frying pan and even in the microwave.

Ingredients

Fried French toast

  • 1 egg per 2 slices of bread
  • Nonstick cooking spray, olive oil, or butter / margarine
  • Cinnamon, to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon (3 ml) vanilla or almond essence
  • (Old) bread (do not cook more than 2 French toast at the same time, otherwise the pan will be too full); you can take any kind of bread you like.
  • Fillings and / or garnishes of your choice
  • Milk (depending on the number of eggs; 2 tablespoons per egg)

French toast from the microwave

  • 1 egg per 2 slices of bread

  • Fillings and / or garnishes of your choice

For the French toast

  • Fruit of your choice
  • Syrup or honey
  • Powdered sugar
  • Cinnamon powder

To step

Method 1 of 2: French toast from the frying pan

  1. Prepare a bowl and break the eggs in it. Add the milk, vanilla essence and cinnamon. Stir everything well with a fork or whisk. Break the eggs and beat them vigorously until they are completely mixed with the other ingredients. Optionally add cinnamon to taste.
  2. Place a slice of soaked bread on a microwave-safe plate. Place the plate carefully in the microwave.
  3. Set the microwave on HIGHEST stand and let the egg be cooked through for one to three minutes.
  4. Serve the French toast with (apple) syrup, fresh fruit, powdered sugar, (organic) jam, or whatever you like.

Tips

  • For a slightly sweeter version, add some sugar and cinnamon to the egg mixture.
  • Sprinkle some sugar over the bread while it is in the pan before turning it over. That way, a crunchy layer of caramelized sugar will appear.
  • You can beat the eggs much easier if you take them out of the fridge and let them come to room temperature 10 to 15 minutes before breaking them.
  • Do not bake the bread on high heat, or on the highest setting, otherwise it will burn on the outside while it is still raw on the inside. Always set the heat source half high.
  • For a party or any other special occasion, you can cut fun shapes out of the bread using cookie cutters, before soaking it in the egg! Certainly if you use a number of different shapes, success at your party is assured!
  • An easy way to estimate approximately how much milk you will need is to add as much milk as the egg to the bowl before you whisk it. Then you can beat the egg and milk together.
  • If you use stale currant bread, you can omit the cinnamon and vanilla essence.
  • If you are using very soft bread, you could toast it first so that it doesn't get too soft when you soak it.
  • Originally, making French toast was a convenient way to handle stale bread. Because this recipe works best with older, drier bread, you could also ask the baker if they have leftover stale bread.
  • If there is some of the egg mixture left, you can fry it with scrambled eggs or an omelet.

Warnings

  • Always fry French toast until completely cooked inside and out. Eating raw eggs can make you nauseous. Therefore, do not forget to make sure that there are no French toast that still contains raw, liquid egg, because that means that they are not completely cooked.
