Your fighting skills are very important in RuneScape as it depends on the variety of weapons you can use, as well as the likelihood of hitting a target. You have the option of training it all at once, or assigning Battle XP to Defense and Power as well, so that you are more balanced as a combatant. It can take a long time to get to the next level if you don't know where to go, so read on to solve that problem.

To step

Part 1 of 3: General tips

  1. Change the settings for a fight. Open your Powers interface by clicking F4 or by clicking on the picture of three purple sparks. Select the Combat Settings tab. Make the following adjustments:
    • Select "Balance" in the short range combat experience section on the right to divide XP between Attack, Power, and Defense. To earn levels in a faster but more challenging way, you must choose to channel 100% of your XP to "Attack".
    • In the Battle Mode section on the left, you need to select Revolution. You will automatically use skills, which will speed up a fight.
  2. Improve your outfit along the way. If you lose from the recommended monsters in the Level Earning Guide, or if you use a lot of food or other items to take in, you probably need a better gear. You may need to take some time off from levels to forge or buy better weapons and armor.
    • If you're still struggling, you should look up the weaknesses of the monster in question online or ask other players about it. Keep cut, smash, and stab weapons with you so you can switch. (Avoid monsters that have Magic or long-range weapons as weakness, making them harder to kill in close-range combat.)
  3. Use experience boosters when available. They are usually not worth the time to look for, as they only work for a limited time and appear mostly randomly in the game world. Having said that, tracking down the following boosters is a nice change if you've had enough of slaughtering monsters:
    • Sacred clay scimitars can be obtained in the Stealing Creation mini-game.
    • Fallen stars (attack) are non-tradable items and are only available to paid members as a possible reward for the Treasure Hunt mini-game.
    • Combat gloves (short-range attack) are occasionally found among items dropped by a defeated enemy, or are the reward for defeating a boss. They are most effective in combat in the Wilderness, a place other players may want to avoid due to the risk of death.
    • Hati claws can only be obtained during the annual festive event in January.
  4. Train prayers to a higher level. Once you train Attack above level 60 or 70, a battle will be very difficult without Prayer skills. Bury bones to train your Prayer Skills.
  5. Train your Slaughter Skill if you want to get an Attack of 70+. Enrolled members should seriously consider completing the Slaughter Challenges appropriate for their level. This will not always give you the fastest increase in experience, but you will reap the rewards when you level up. The Butcher skill, available to members only, allows you to defeat monsters that give you a lot of experience and drop high-level items.
    • If you're just trying to improve your Attack a little bit without trying to plod your way to the highest levels, this may not be necessary.

Part 2 of 3: Play for free

  1. Level 1-20. You have quite a few options here. You can go north of Burthrope and kill the trolls there, although they are of little use. You can go to Lumbridge, kill the chickens north of the castle and collect their feathers to make a lot of money later. If you go a little further north, you can also visit Beefy Bill's fields and kill cows. You will earn serious money with this, because Beefy Bill will give you the value of the cowhides in money. Finally, you could go west, across the bridge, to kill the goblins near the two huts.
  2. Level 20-30. Collect 10 gold to pay the toll and then enter Al-Kharid. Go up the stairs and into the castle and kill Al-Kharid's soldiers. They drop quite a bit of spice. In addition, if you attack one, you will also get the rest over you, making this a very effective tactic. If you are low on health points, you should pick up some of the coins they drop and go to the kebab shop west of your position. You can buy kebabs here for one coin each, which will refill your life meter up to 1000 points.
  3. Level 30-40. Buy a bronze key at the Grand Exchange, which will only cost you a few hundred coins, then walk southwest from the Grand Exchange until you come across a house with a locked door. Use the key on the door and then go down the stairs. Here you can kill the hill giants. Don't forget to take the big bones and bury them elsewhere so you can easily gain Prayer Experience, as well as the Limwurt roots, which will earn you 1000 coins each.
  4. Level 40-50. Go down to the second floor of the Stronghold of Security and then head north until you come across a room full of meat crawlers. Kill these, preferably with a stabbing weapon such as a spear. They often drop 42 Fire Runs and two Nature Runs, as well as many high-level herbs.
  5. Level 50-70. Arriving at this level you have two options. If you want to earn the most experience points per hour, go to the Varrock Sewers and kill the moss giants. They don't drop much but are vulnerable to melee weapons, allowing you to effectively use a rune scimitar or a 2h rune sword. You can also go to the fourth floor of the Stronghold of Security and kill Ankous instead. They give a reasonable amount of experience points per hour and also drop a lot of expensive things, such as yew blocks, mithril ores and battle sticks.
  6. Level 70-99. When you arrive here, you have two options again. You can go and kill deadly red spiders in Edgeville's dungeon. They have the highest experience point earnings rate of any creature in the free-to-play game, but as a downside, they barely drop and are also poisonous. You can also go to Forinthry's dungeon or Wilderness crater and kill hellhounds. They earn about the same amount of experience points per hour, but drop bones and amulets more often.

Part 3 of 3: Paid play

  1. Consider operating as a butcher. If you want to maximize your account, it may be worthwhile to get involved with butcher work in addition to your melee stats as it will improve both skills at the same time. This method will also give you access to better monsters later in the game that require high stats, such as cleft demons.
  2. Level 1-10. Your methods are the same as for the free to play game. Kill goblins, mountain trolls, or even cockroach drones, due to the fact that they often drop default gems.
  3. Level 20-30. Kill cockroach workers. They give a reasonable amount of experience points per defeated individual and drop famous ores, sometimes even the coveted rune scimitar. You will find them in the Stronghold of Player Security, where you enter through a chasm in the ground south of Edgeville, next to the Soul Wars portal.
  4. Level 30-40. Kill cockroach soldiers. You will find them in the same area as workers, they often drop rune items, and there is a reasonable chance that they will drop medium value clue scrolls. They bring in an astonishing amount of experience compared to their low level and drop useful things, as was mentioned a bit ago.
  5. Level 40-60. Teleport to Caste Wars through a dueling ring and go east. You will encounter a lot of ogres. They frequently drop seeds and even more golden amulets than rock crabs. They don't actually drop anything else, but they yield a lot of experience points. You could also kill moss giants west of Ardougne.
  6. Level 60-70. Kill Hellhounds in the Taverly Dungeon. You'll need a dusty key to access this place, or a 70 agility to take the shortcut to blue dragons, or an 80 agility to take a shortcut straight to the hellhounds themselves. Using the set of a Guthan or the aura of vampirism will eliminate the need for food. Soul split does this too, but chances are you have this. A charming little devil also helps with this, as they belong to that group of creatures in the game that most often drop gold amulets.
  7. Level 70-80. Consider getting a Dungeon Exploration skill from 85 to access frost dragons. Not only will this earn you chaos weapons for later, but also a lot of money and experience points. If you'd rather not do this, go south of the Bandit Camp to the Exiled Kalphite Hive and kill Exiled Kalphite Guardians there. They often drop blue amulets and herbs, as well as high and elite level clues.
  8. Level 80-90. It is strongly recommended to have a high slaughter level before this point, as almost all monsters that will earn you a lot of experience will require a slaughter level of 80+. If you have this, you will have to kill canyon demons and ghost guards in the slaughterhouse and the GWD respectively. If you haven't reached this level yet, you need to start killing water devils. You can find the latter by teleporting to Barbarian Assault and then running south and jumping over the vortex after completing Barbary training.
  9. Level 90-99. Again, a high slaughter level is almost desperately needed. If you can, kill Airut to get just about the greatest amount of prayer and combat experience possible in the game. In addition, he also drops razor back gloves, which fetch a few million per set. After completing The World Wakes, Automan trackers are also a good choice to kill when you reach a slaughter level of 95, as they drop familiar precious items such as magic logs and sharks. If you can't kill these monsters, you must kill General Graardor, who lives with his subordinates in the God Wars Dungeon, or stick with water devils.

Tips

  • Training your defense at the same time allows you to wear better armor, which will protect you from more powerful monsters.
  • Once you pass the lower levels, quests take time that is better spent killing monsters. However, the quests are a lot less boring, so do these if you want to do something different.
  • Don't forget to bring a lot of food with you. Buying food is much faster than making your own food, but it can become expensive once you reach the higher attack levels.
