Tumblr is a microblogging service that has become very popular in recent years. If you want to start using Tumblr, but have no idea where to start, this article can be a great help for you. Follow the steps below and you'll have mastered Tumblr in no time.

1. Go to Tumblr to create an account. Your username is both the name under which you post and the URL of your blog ("yourusername" dot tumblr dot com). Your username is not permanent, but can be changed via the settings of your blog.
2. There are seven different types of posts in which you can fully express your creativity. If you're just starting out with Tumblr, it's best to try out each style to see exactly what options are available. The seven different types of posts are:
   • Text. This post is simply text. Images, hyperlinks, videos and some widgets can be added to the posts and you can manually adjust the HTML of the post.
   • Photo. This item consists of an image and a short description. You can upload photos from your PC or use the URL of a photo online.
   • Quote. This post contains a title (the quote) and a line of text (the source of the quote).
   • Link. A link consists of a descriptive text that links to the website or page that is being described.
   • Chat. This post is a fragment of a conversation.
   • Audio. An audio post consists of an MP3 file (this can be music, but also a podcast or any sound) that can be played directly. You can only post one audio post per day.
   • Video. A video post consists of a video that you can upload from your PC or import from YouTube or Vimeo, for example.
3. Follow people and get followers. Followers are other Tumblr users who subscribe to your blog. The posts you post will now appear on their dashboard. If you follow others yourself, messages from those people will also appear on your dashboard. If you do not want to be followed by someone, you can block that person. The more followers you get, the more likely your posts will be reblogged and people will like your posts.
4. Reblog and like posts. If people like your posts so much that they want to share them, they can reblog your post. When someone does this, the post will appear on the dashboards of that person's followers. If someone likes your post, but does not want to share it, he can like the post by clicking on the heart at the bottom right of the post. You can see how often a post has been liked and liked in the notes of the post.
5. Send and receive messages. If you turn on your Ask box (similar to a mailbox), you can receive messages from other Tumblr users. You can reply to these messages by posting them on your blog, but you can also send a message back via the Ask box of the other person.
6. Waiting lists and designs. If you want to put a series of posts online at a time when you are offline, you can schedule them and put them on a waiting list. You can also choose when the posts will appear online (for example every 15 minutes). Saving posts as draft allows you to save a post to finish later.
7. Customize your Tumblr page. You can change your blog's settings on the Customize page. Here you will find the following parts:
   • Info. Choose a title for your blog, edit the description of your page, select your profile image and change your username / URL.
   • Theme. Select a theme for your blog. You can also choose to write your own HTML and make your blog completely unique.
   • Appearance. Change your background page or color, your tagline, etc. Here, some themes offer the option to also display your favorite posts.
   • Pages. Here you can add, delete or modify pages. For example, create an About page to share information about yourself. An FAQ is also featured on many Tumblr blogs.
   • Services. Link your blog here to other websites such as Twitter and Facebook.
   • Community. Adjust your privacy settings or create a page where users can submit posts.
   • Advanced. Here you will find other options such as the selection of the time zone you are in, manual CSS and the amount of posts you want to show per page on your blog.
8. Post homemade, original content. To guarantee the quality of your posts, it is important that texts are well written, images are relevant and that you stick to a specific theme on your blog. The most popular blogs are the ones that deal with one particular topic. Add tags to your posts to make it easy for users to find your posts. Also make sure that you mention a source for things you have not made yourself. You can do this, for example, by adding a link in the Source bar. You can find this by clicking on the cogwheel at the top right when posting a message. Make sure you post interesting posts and add something to your blog every day so that your followers always have something new to read or watch.

• Don't worry if you don't collect followers that quickly. It often takes a while for people to find your blog.
• Make sure to add tags to your posts to make it easier for people to find your blog.

Warnings

• If you also allow anonymous messages to your Ask box, you may receive annoying messages. Don't take this personally; this is a regular occurrence on Tumblr. If you want to avoid receiving nasty messages, you can adjust your settings so that people cannot send you anonymous messages.
