Playing games on the PlayStation 4 is of course fun, but sometimes developers have to fix bugs and glitches from their games. Fortunately, updating your PS4 games is very easy. The most convenient way to do this is to turn on automatic updates. This allows your games to be updated in the background, or when your PS4 is on standby. You can also update your games manually by selecting a game and then downloading and installing the update itself.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Set up automatic updates

  1. Turn on your PS4 with the middle button on your controller. If you are prompted to do this, press the button again. Select your profile from the screen that asks "Who is using this controller?" Then press "X".
  2. Press your left stick up and scroll to the settings screen. The settings button is orange and white, with a small toolbox logo in a white circle. You can find the button between the power options and the trophies options. Navigate to the "Settings" menu option using the D-pad or the left stick, then press "X".
  3. Scroll down to "System". This option can be found between "Accessibility" and "Initialization". Press "X" to open the menu.
  4. Scroll down to "Automatic Downloads and Uploads". This menu option is the second from the top, between "System Information" and "Voice Control Settings". Press "X" to open the menu.
  5. Select the option "Automatic Downloads". Pressing "X" when you are on the "Automatic Downloads" option turns on automatic downloads for games and apps. This option can be found between the options "Saved data" and "Install automatically".
  6. Navigate to the "Power Options" menu. Press "O" twice on the controller to return to the settings menu, then scroll down to "Power options". This menu has a small white logo in the shape of two hands with a battery. Press "X" to open the menu.
  7. Select the features you want available in rest mode. Choose the second option in the menu, "Set Features Available in Rest Mode". This ensures that games can update when your PS4 is in rest mode. If you are using Remote Play, you should also enable the "Enable PS4 from Network" option here.
  8. Put the PS4 in rest mode before turning it off. Press and hold the middle button on your controller, then scroll to the "Power" option. Select "To Rest Mode" here.

Method 2 of 2: Update games manually

  1. Select the application you want to update from the main menu. Power on your PS4, open your account, then use the D-pad or the left stick to navigate to the game you want to update.
  2. Check for updates in the options menu. With the game you want to update selected, press the Options button on your controller. Scroll down to the "Check for updates" option in the menu.
  3. Go to downloads when the game is ready to be updated. If an update is available, you will be notified with "An update is available for this application". You will then be asked to go to the downloads screen. Press "X" to open the downloads screen.
    • If no updates are available, your PS4 will also let you know.
  4. Select the game and start the download. In the downloads screen you will see a list of all updates available for your apps and games. Select the game you want to update with "X", then confirm that you want to update the game.
    • Updating takes time. How long an update takes depends on the size of the update file.
    • You can continue to play games as usual while the update is being installed.
