Whether you're going to a big concert or attending a prestigious gala, smokey eyes give your look a chic and eye-catching appearance. You don't have to be a makeup artist or makeup pro to perfect the smokey eye look. All you need is the right resources and a little knowledge. 1. Choose the colors. Although you can use all colors for smokey eyes, you need three different shades of one color. The classic smokey eye is made of black or gray, but bronze and brown are also often used.
   • Green eyes look particularly good with gray and purple smokey eyes while blue eyes really stand out with dark blue and grays. Gold and copper shades look great with brown eyes.
   • You are supposed to choose three shades of a color: a light cream shade, a basic middle shade, and a dark smokey shade.
   • Try not to choose bright colors or, if you have very light skin, colors that are too dark. The smokey eyes are meant to emphasize your beautiful face instead of distracting it from it.
2. Use the correct supplies. While it is quick and easy to use the first three complementary sponge brush eyeshadow shades you come across, you can only really get smoky eyes with the right supplies.
   • Using loose powders gives you the best opportunity to blend the colors. This is necessary to create beautiful smokey eyes. Although it is possible to use the so-called "pressed powder" or liquid eyeshadow, you still achieve the best result with loose eyeshadow powder.

   • Make sure to use high quality makeup brushes. Using dirty old sponge brushes will give you a smeared look with shades that don't blend well. The best brush for smokey eyes is a spherical brush, with a bulge at the top of the brush. You can buy these at the drugstore, department stores or make-up specialist stores.
   • Make sure you have a concealer and eyeshadow primer to pre-treat your lids before applying the smokey eye. Use a concealer brush to apply them.
   • Have a large blush brush, makeup remover, and cotton swabs ready to fix mistakes or wipe loose eyeshadow powder from your cheeks.
3. Remove excess make-up. If any eyeshadow or mascara has gotten under your cheeks, use a large makeup brush to blot it off in quick, large swipes. If there are mascara stains on your eyelids or cheeks, remove them with a cotton swab dipped in makeup cleanser. Then, grab your eyeshadow brush again to apply the makeup that has come off.
