Moldings complete your room if they are neatly painted, but this can sometimes be difficult to do. Many people just hire a professional painter so they don't have to worry about making a mess. However, this is not always necessary. If you plan to paint yourself to save money, you can easily learn the technique to paint the trim in your home.

1. Decide whether you want to paint your trim indoors or out. The process you go through when painting trim is generally the same whether you do it indoors or outdoors. However, there are a number of advantages and disadvantages to both methods:
   • If you paint your trim outdoors, you will have to remove them from your home, and that will take some time.This generally gives a better and smoother result and you don't have to bend over or adopt other awkward postures while you paint.
   • If you're painting your trim indoors, you don't have to spend extra time removing them from your walls. However, you do need to stoop and stand on a ladder while painting. In addition, you must also cover the walls and floors with masking tape.
2. Gather all your supplies. To prepare your moldings for painting, you will need fine-grit sandpaper (80, 100 and 120 grit), filler or filler, a putty knife, primer, caulk with a caulking gun and masking tape. To paint you will need some good quality paint brushes in sizes to match the size of the frame you are going to paint. You also need foam rollers and durable paint. You can also choose to finish the frames with a layer of lacquer at the end.
   • Even if you spend more at the start, it will be worth buying good quality materials for your job. Your moldings will then look better and last longer.
   • You need to calculate how much paint you will need based on the total area of ​​all the trim you plan to paint. You can ask for help at your local hardware store if needed.
3. Apply sealant around the edges of the trim. Kitten is the last step in the process and is overlooked by many people. However, it does make an important difference in what the trim will ultimately look like. With sealant you close all gaps between the decorative frame and the wall, so that you protect the frame against damage and give it a finished look. Gently spread the sealant over the seam between the molding and the wall. During the kitten, use your finger to push the sealant in the crack and seal the hole more evenly. Use a damp cloth to clean the nozzle of the caulking gun so that it does not become clogged. You can also use the cloth to wipe your hands.
   • Always choose a kit with a color that is close to the color of your decorative frame. Often this is white. The idea is that the kit blends so seamlessly into the frame.
   • Wait several hours for the sealant to dry before returning your furniture to its original location.

Tips

• If you make wide strokes with your brush, you will be able to get a smoother finish on the moldings and see fewer brushstrokes once the paint has dried.
• A disposable foam brush will likely give you a smoother finish on your moldings than a bristle paintbrush.

Warnings

• Only paint in areas that are well ventilated. Paint fumes can be dangerous.
• Make sure that children, pets, or others for whom the toxic materials could be harmful cannot reach the freshly painted areas.
