Portable Document Format (pdf) files are very useful for combining text and images. They can be opened on any computer and the image quality is usually very high. It may happen that you have to process a PDF page in, for example, a PowerPoint presentation, and then it is very useful if you have the PDF as a JPEG. We'll show you a few easy and free conversion methods for Mac and Windows. Read on!

Method 1 of 4: Using Online Conversion

1. Choose a file converter on the Internet. There are all kinds of programs that can convert PDF to JPEG, you upload the PDF file and it is then converted to JPEG. If you have multiple pages in your PDF file, each page will be converted to JPG separately.
2. Upload the file. Click the "Choose file" button for the converter you have chosen. Browse your computer for the PDF file you want to upload. One of the disadvantages of these free services is that you are often only allowed to upload a file of maximum 25 MB (In the case of "Zamzar" it is 100 MB, in the case of Smallpdf there is no limit).
3. With some programs you can indicate whether you want a JPEG of the exact PDF or if you want to extract the images.
4. Choose the conversion quality. The default setting is usually 150 DPI, which results in reasonable quality conversion. But you can often change it to 300 DPI, then the quality will be much better, but the file will also be much bigger.
   • Sometimes you have to choose JPG as the desired format. In other cases JPG is the default setting.
5. Download the converted files. The time required for the conversion depends on the number of people using the service, as well as the size of your file. Some services will send you an email when the conversion is complete, others will send you an email with the converted file.
   • If the file has multiple pages you will either get multiple links or you can download the files at once as a ZIP file.

Method 2 of 4: Using photo editing programs

1. Open Photoshop, PaintShop Pro or GIMP. Photoshop is very expensive, PaintShop Pro a bit cheaper, and GIMP is a free, open source program that includes many of Photoshop's features. With all programs you can quickly convert a PDF file to JPG.
2. Open the PDF file. If the file consists of multiple pages, you can load them as "Layers" or "Images". Choose "Images", then it is easier to convert the entire document.
3. Save / Export any image as JPG. In Photoshop and PaintShop Pro, click "File" and then "Save As". You can now choose what quality JPG you want. In GIMP, click on "File" and then on "Export". Choose JPG and select the desired quality.
   • Repeat this for each individual page.

Method 3 of 4: Using Preview on Mac OS X

1. Open Preview. Preview is a program that comes standard with OSX, with which you can view and convert files. If it isn't in your dock, you'll find it under Programs.
2. Open the PDF. In the File menu, select "Open ...". Preview now opens a dialog where you can open one or more files. Handy if you want to convert multiple files
3. Click on "Archive" and select "Export". A dialog box will appear, choose the desired name and location, and select "Structure" JPEG.
4. Click on "Save". The PDF file will now be converted and a new JPEG file will be created. You can open this new file with photo editing programs, process it in documents or upload it on the internet.

Method 4 of 4: Using Google Drive

1. Create a Google account if you don't already have one.
2. Upload your PDF file to Google Drive by clicking the upload button at the top left of the window.
3. Click on the document to open it. After a while the document will be displayed. Zoom in to the maximum level for the best quality.
4. Press F12 to access "Inspect Element".
   • On Google Chrome, make sure the "Elements" tab is selected. Click the magnifying glass icon and on the preview page of your document, click the document you want to convert.
   • On Firefox you need to activate the "Inspector" tab. Click on your document above the inspector screen to select your document (in Google Drive).
5. Search for the selected link. About 4 lines below you will see img src = "link to your jpg">.
   • Right click on this link select "Open link in new tab". Now your image is ready to be saved.

Tips

• If you are using Fine Print (the demo is free, but your file will be watermarked), print it on the "Fine Print" printer. After that, you can save it as a JPG file.
