This article will teach you how to leave an open line when you press Enter in Facebook Messenger instead of sending the message. This is only necessary when using the Facebook website, as the Enter / Return keys are different from the Submit button in the mobile app.

To step

1. Go to Facebook in your internet browser. Enter your username and password and click "Login".
2. Click on Messenger. This is in the left panel below your profile picture.
3. Click on a conversation.
4. Enter text.
5. Keep ⇧ Shift and press ↵ Enter. The typing cursor will move to the next line without sending the message.
   • This also works for conversation windows on the main Facebook page.
   • It is no longer possible to change the default action when you press Enter while sending messages, although it used to be possible.
   • When using the Messenger mobile app, pressing Enter or Return will automatically start a new line without sending the message, as there is a separate Send button here.
