You don't have to be a beauty queen to have eyes that look gorgeous and are done up perfectly with just the right shades of eyeshadow. You can easily perfect your eye makeup routine with a few high-quality remedies and a little practice. Try out the following ways of applying makeup so you can become the beauty rival of your friends.

To step

Method 1 of 5: The beginning

  1. Choose your eyeshadow. Because there are entire stores full of make-up only, choosing the right texture, shade and brand can seem very difficult. Do not let the enormous diversity in this offer deter you, but embrace it! The hundreds of options allow you to choose the eyeshadow that suits you best. Eyeshadow comes in every color you can think of and comes in loose powder form, solid form (compact powder) and cream-like form.
    • The eyeshadow that contains the most pigment is the usual loose powder. However, this one is also the hardest to deal with due to its loose shape. Creamy eyeshadow is easiest to apply. It just gets smudged faster than powder eyeshadow. The best texture to start with if you are a newbie to applying eye makeup is solid eyeshadow.
    • While you don't need dozens of eyeshadow colors to be a makeup artist, it is recommended that you have at least three eyeshadow shades in the same color palette. The different looks all need a light, medium and dark eyeshadow.
    • If you don't want to apply your eyeshadow too heavily, choose three shades in neutral tones such as grays or browns. Or just choose colors that appeal to you and that match your style.
    EXPERT TIP

Choose the right brushes. Although you can indeed use your fingers to apply the eyeshadows, they are probably too large and have a layer of natural oil on them which makes applying the makeup difficult. Invest in a few good make-up brushes so that you can easily achieve a beautiful result. Avoid sponge brushes before applying your eyeshadow as they don't apply the pigment properly.

    • Use a stiff flat brush to apply eyeshadow all over your lid. This brush is best suited to absorb a lot of pigment and distribute it over your entire eyelid.
    • A soft or hard rounded brush is used to apply eyeshadow in the crease of your eyelid (where your moving eyelid ends and the portion starts towards your eyebrow) and apply it outwards. This brush is necessary to apply a smooth even color from your lash line to your brow bone.
    • Get a soft thin brush to apply the eyeshadow close to your lash line. These are small and fine enough to use on both your upper and lower lash line as well as areas that are hard to reach such as the corner of your eye.
  2. Put on your everyday face makeup first. Applying your eye makeup is the last step of applying all your makeup. That's why you apply your regular face makeup first. Apply your liquid make-up (concealer), your face powder (foundation), rouge (blush or bronzer) and eyebrow pencil before you start with your eyeshadow.
    • Use an eyeshadow base (primer) to make sure your eyeshadow stays on all day long. Otherwise, natural oil in your skin will pass through the eyeshadow and build up in the crease of your eyelid a few hours after application.
    • Never put on your mascara before applying your eyeshadow, unless you are going to apply a special smokey eye make-up and always apply your eyeliner after you have applied the eyeshadow.

Method 2 of 5: This is how you apply flared eye make-up

  1. Let the shades blend together. Clean your round brush with an antibacterial brush cleaner or soap and dry it with a clean towel. Use a gentle sweeping motion to blend the colors onto your lid. Make sure you don't put the darkest color too close to the center of your lid or this will make the light part of your shadow smudged. Let the outer edges of your eyeshadow also blend into your skin so that there are no harsh color transitions on your eyelid.

Method 4 of 5: Apply banana style eye makeup

  1. Let the eyeshadow blend together. Use the round brush after it has been thoroughly cleaned to blend the colors well. To blend the shades smoothly, take a few minutes to gently blend the dark eyeshadow into the middle shade. Try not to over-touch the dark eyeshadow line along the lash line so that it doesn't get blurred from over-smearing it.
  2. Ready!

Tips

  • Always apply the lightest color first and then work towards your darkest color.
  • Clean all your makeup brushes after each use to avoid mixing or smudging of eyeshadow on the palette and lid.
  • Layering creamy eyeshadow topped with powder eyeshadow can have a brightening effect, but it can also make it look cakey and poorly blended.
  • Always keep a few cotton swabs handy in case you make a mess. If you use your fingers it will probably get smeared too much. Then just dip the cotton swab in make-up cleaner, take it off and you're done!
  • Instead of making up each eye separately one after the other you can make up both eyes at the same time. Apply the lightest color to both eyes, then the middle color to both eyes, then the darkest color to both eyes. This prevents you from having to clean your brushes often.
  • If you use powder eyeshadow, you can dip the brush in water to create extra sparkle.

Warnings

  • If you wear contact lenses, it is best to see if the make-up you are applying is suitable for people who wear contact lenses.
