Gear oil is a smooth, oily substance that keeps your car's gearbox lubricated. The type of oil you need differs per car, and it also depends on whether you have an automatic or a manual car. In this article we explain how you can top up your oil yourself!

Part 1 of 2: Checking the fluid

1. Let the engine idle. The engine should be running while you add the oil, but make sure the car is in neutral or in the P position. Check that the parking brake is properly applied. Open your hood.
2. Replace the dipstick in the gearbox and check that the dipstick is securely in place. Most cars require you to turn the dipstick one turn or sometimes there is a slide on top to lock it.

Tips

• If you don't want to do it yourself, ask your mechanic to check the gearbox oil at the next service.

Warnings

• Always use the correct type of oil. The wrong oil can seriously damage your engine, repairs will not be covered by any warranty.
• If you often need to top up with oil, have your car checked at the garage. There may be a leak.
