This article teaches you how to record music from Spotify with Audacity. Audacity is a free audio recording and editing program available for Windows, Mac and Linux computers.

To step

  1. Open Audacity. Double-click the Audacity app to open the program. The icon looks like a yellow sound wave with blue headphones. If you haven't installed Audacity yet, do the following:
    • In Windows: go to https://www.audacityteam.org/download/windows and click Audacity X.X.X Installer at the top of the page (where X.X.X is the latest available version). Double-click the installation file and follow the instructions to install Audacity.
    • On a Mac: go to https://www.audacityteam.org/download/mac and click Audacity X.X.X .dmg file at the top of the page (where X.X.X is the latest available version). Double-click the .dmg file and follow the instructions to install Audacity.
  2. Select an audio host. Click on the drop-down menu to the left of the microphone icon and select:
    • In Windows: Windows WASAPI
    • On a Mac: Core Audio
  3. Select a recording device. Click on the drop-down menu to the right of the microphone icon and select your speakers (or whatever output device you are using). Select the speakers or output device with which you normally play the audio from your computer. To find out which device you are currently using, do the following:
    • In Windows: click on Select Stereo recording. Click the following drop-down menu to the left of the speaker icon and select 2 (Stereo) Recording channels. This is the second option in the drop-down menu.
    • Select your audio playback device. Click the drop-down menu to the right of the speaker icon and select the audio output you want to use to listen to the music. Usually it is best to choose the same output that you have selected as the recording device. That way you can hear what you are recording.
    • Click the "Record" button. This is the button with the red circle at the top of the Audacity window. This is how you start recording all the audio that your computer plays.
    • Click on play in Spotify. Go to Spotify and press "Play", or click on the song you want to record to play it. As the song plays, you will see sound waves in Audacity's timeline as it records the music.
    • Click the stop button when you have finished recording. This is the button with the black square at the top of the Audacity window.
    • Save your recording. When you're done recording, you can export your recording:
      • click on File.
      • click on Export.
      • click on Export as MP3.
      • Type a file name for the song.
      • Choose a location to save the recording.
      • click on Save.
