Polyester is a synthetic fabric that requires special care. One thing to consider is that it creases very easily and cannot withstand high temperatures, making wrinkles a little more difficult to remove. Fortunately, there are a few ways you can get wrinkles out of a polyester garment without damaging the fabric, such as washing and drying, ironing on a low setting, or steaming the fabric without the steamer getting too close to the fabric. Once the garment is wrinkled free, hang or lay it flat to let it cool completely before doing anything with it.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Wash and dry the garment

  1. Consult the washing instructions on the label. The recommended wash cycle and temperature may vary depending on whether the garment is pure polyester or a blend. Delicate fabrics, such as a blend of polyester and silk, may require a gentle wash cycle with cold or warm water.
    • When in doubt, wash the garment with cold or warm water on the non-iron program. Never use hot water to wash a polyester garment as this can damage the fabric.
    • The care label also indicates whether it is okay to iron or dry the item, which might be helpful to know if the wrinkles don't come out after washing and drying.
  2. Put a mild detergent and fabric softener in the washing machine. A mild detergent is less likely to damage the garment, especially if it is made of a delicate fabric. Also put a soft fabric softener in the washing machine. This will help reduce static electricity after you dry the garment.
    • Polyester is known to generate a lot of static electricity, so the use of fabric softener is highly recommended.
  3. Dry the garment in the non-iron program for 15 to 20 minutes. Place a tumble dryer cloth in the tumble dryer along with the garment to reduce static, if desired. Then turn the dryer on low and turn the knob to a maximum of 20 minutes. This should provide enough heat and time for the garment to dry. You can dry the item longer if needed, but make sure to check it every five minutes after it has been in the appliance for 20 minutes.
    • If the dryer does not have an iron-free program, select the lowest heat setting.

Warning: Never dry a polyester garment on a high setting or leave it in the dryer for too long. Polyester is not resistant to high temperatures.

  4. Hang the garment immediately after it is dry to prevent further wrinkles. Leaving the garment in the dryer can result in new and possibly even permanent wrinkles. Once dry, remove the garment and hang it on a clothes hanger to cool. Let it hang for at least five minutes or as long as it takes for the fabric to cool.
    • Once the fabric is cool to the touch, you can safely wear or fold the garment without wrinkling.

Are you in a hurry? Put the polyester garment in the dryer along with a damp towel and tumble drier and let it dry on low for ten minutes. Take it out immediately and lay it flat or hang it up to cool.

Method 2 of 3: Using an iron

  1. Turn on an iron on the lowest setting. Polyester fabric cannot withstand high temperatures, so do not set the heat of the iron to maximum. Set it on low or set it on synthetic or polyester if your iron has that heat setting.
    • Consult your iron's manual if you are unsure which setting is best for polyester.
  2. Hang the garment or leave it on the ironing board to let it dry flat for five minutes. Do not fold or wear the garment right away, otherwise it may cause new wrinkles. Instead, hang it on a clothes hanger or let it cool on the ironing board. Then do not touch the garment until it has cooled down completely. Make sure the fabric feels cool before folding or wearing it.

Method 3 of 3: Steam out the wrinkles

  1. Fill the iron tank with water and set it to the steam setting. Consult the manufacturer's instructions to determine how much water to put in the reservoir and how long it will take to heat up. In most cases, 10 to 15 minutes should be enough time for the iron to get hot and start giving off steam.
    • You can also use a handheld steamer if you have one. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for how much water to put in the reservoir and how long to let it heat up.
  2. Turn the polyester garment inside out and place it on the ironing board. Prepare the fabric for the ironing board while the iron is heating up. Turn it inside out so that you are less likely to damage the fabric. Then smooth it out on the ironing board as much as possible.
    • If you don't have an ironing board, fold a towel in half and place it on a table, counter, or bed. Then put the polyester garment on top. Make sure not to use a colored towel if the garment is light or pastel colored.

Tip: If you steam curtains, you can also hang them on the curtain rod and steam them hanging. The weight of the curtains helps to remove any wrinkles.

  3. Hang the garment or leave it on the ironing board to let it dry flat for five minutes. After you have finished steaming all of the wrinkled areas on the garment, hang it on a clothes hanger or leave it flat on the ironing board. Let the polyester garment cool for five minutes. Do not carry or fold the garment until it is completely cool, otherwise it may cause new wrinkles.
    • After five minutes, touch the fabric to see if it is cool. If so, you can wear or fold and store the garment.

Are you in a hurry? Spray the garment with a mixture of 240 ml water and 5 ml fabric softener. Then hang it up in your bathroom and take a shower. The steam from the shower will help release any wrinkles in the garment. Then put the garment in the dryer for a few minutes if it is still damp after showering.
