Coconut oil costs a lot less than flea treatment from the pet store, and it is also less likely to cause health problems in your pet. It will also make your dog smell like coconut!

To step

  1. Buy cold-pressed coconut oil. It contains lauric acid, which kills and prevents fleas. You buy it at the supermarket, health food store or other places where they sell cooking oil. You can sometimes find it with the hair products too, because you can use it to make your hair shine!
  2. Take a tablespoon of coconut oil. The coconut oil will melt if you keep it in a warm room and it will look like a transparent liquid. When it is colder the coconut oil will solidify, it will be white and hard.
  3. Take some coconut oil in your hand and rub your hands together, then the coconut oil will melt if it was still hard. You can also pour some into a small container so that you can take some out every time it has melted.
  4. Rub your dog's coat with coconut oil on the areas where he has fleas, dry skin, broken skin from scratching or bald patches. It does get a little greasy of course, so rub it in really well. The fleas are dead within 5 minutes.
  5. Take some extra coconut oil in your hands and rub it into the tips of your dog's coat, as well as under his stomach.
  6. Put your dog on a sweater all day or night so that the oil can soak in and so he doesn't lick it, because it tastes good. However, it won't hurt if he eats it, unlike a commercial flea remedy.
  7. Repeat this every day, or a few times a week, until you know if it works, and until all the fleas are gone and don't come back. Or until you notice that his skin starts to look better and the coat starts to grow again.

Tips

  • Always keep a few jars of coconut oil at home if you have pets with sensitive skin or fleas.
  • Coconut oil can clog pores and stick to your pet's coat and leave dirt on it, which can feel very annoying and cause your pet to scratch more. So you can also just give him a massage with coconut oil, and then bathe him to wash all the oil from his coat with dog shampoo.
