If you reset the password on the router, you can open its configuration page and make changes to the settings. To reset the password on the router, you need to restore the default settings by pressing a special button on the router itself.

Steps

Method 1 of 5: Netgear

  1. 1 Turn on the Netgear router and wait a minute for the router to boot up.
  2. 2 Find the “Restore Factory Settings” button, which has a red line around it and is labeled accordingly.
  3. 3 Press and hold the Restore Factory Settings button for seven seconds. Press the button with a thin object, such as a straightened paper clip.
  4. 4 Release the button when the power light starts blinking and then allow the router to fully reboot. The password on the router will be reset when the power indicator stops blinking and turns green or white. The new default password is the word "password" (without quotes).

Method 2 of 5: Linksys

  1. 1 Locate the "Reset" button on your Linksys router. This small, round button is located on the back of the router and is labeled in red.
  2. 2 Turn on the router, wait for it to boot up, and then press and hold the reset button for 10 seconds. The power indicator will blink.
    • The reset button on older Linksys routers must be held down for 30 seconds.
  3. 3 Unplug the router from the electrical outlet, and then plug it back in.
  4. 4 Wait for the power indicator to stop blinking - it will take about a minute. The password on the router will be reset. There is no new password by default, that is, to open the router's configuration page, the password line must be left blank.

Method 3 of 5: Belkin

  1. 1 Locate the "Reset" button on your Belkin router. This small, round button is located on the back of the router and is labeled accordingly.
  2. 2 Turn on the router, wait for it to boot up, and then press and hold the reset button for 15 seconds.
  3. 3 Wait at least one minute for the router to completely reboot. Your Belkin router will be reset to factory settings. There is no new password by default, that is, to open the router's configuration page, the password line must be left blank.

Method 4 of 5: D-Link

  1. 1 Turn on your router and wait for it to boot up.
  2. 2 Press and hold the Reset button for 10 seconds. Press the button with a thin object, such as a straightened paper clip.
  3. 3 Release the reset button after 10 seconds and wait for the router to fully reboot.
  4. 4 Wait at least 15 seconds after the router restarts before changing its settings. There is no new password by default, that is, to open the router's configuration page, the password line must be left blank.

Method 5 of 5: Another Router

  1. 1 Turn on your router and wait for it to boot up.
  2. 2 Locate the “Reset” button on the router. In most cases, it will be marked with the appropriate markings. If not, look for a small button or a recessed button that can only be pressed with a thin object such as a straightened paperclip.
  3. 3 Press and hold the reset button for 10-15 seconds. The router settings will be reset to factory defaults, including the password.
  4. 4 Open the router's configuration page using the default credentials. In most cases, the default password is “admin”, “password”, or just leave the password line blank.
    • If you are unable to open the configuration page, contact your router manufacturer for the default password.

Warnings

  • Remember: If you reset the password and restore the factory settings of the router, the user settings of the router such as frequency, channel and username will be deleted. Thus, after resetting the password, you will have to reconfigure the router.
