When looking for concealer, you may have noticed that concealers are sold in colors other than normal skin tones. It may seem strange to come across mint green, light purple and banana yellow concealer when the product should not normally show on your skin. Indeed, these concealers do not stand out and neutralize discoloration to give you an even complexion. By choosing the right color and applying the product correctly, you can use color correcting concealer to hide blemishes, scars, puffiness, rosacea and other discolored areas. You can also use this type of concealer to make clear skin stand out more so that it looks healthy and radiant.

Part 1 of 3: Choosing the right color

  1. Understand how a color correcting concealer works. A color correcting concealer helps to hide skin discolouration by giving problem areas a more neutral tone. Knowledge of color theory comes in handy when choosing a concealer.
    • Complementary colors are colors that are opposite each other in the color circle. These are pairs of complementary colors that you use to correct your complexion: red and green, yellow and purple, and blue and orange.
    • With most types of color correcting concealer, makeup of a certain color hides discoloration in the corresponding complementary color.
    • Concealer in a color that is exactly opposite of the color in question can also sometimes over-correct the discoloration, leaving the skin looking dead and unnatural. In this case, you use the color that is next the complementary color of the discoloration.
    • Most color correcting concealers are available in a single shade, with the exception of orange and peach shades. With these shades, choose darker shades if you have a darker skin tone and pastel shades if your skin is lighter in color.
    • Usually you apply concealer in your normal complexion over the color correcting concealer.
  2. Treat very red spots with green. Green is the color that is opposite red in the color circle and is therefore the strongest color to hide red. That's why a green color-correcting concealer works best for tackling areas that are very red. Most green color correcting concealers have a mint green pastel color.
    • Apply green concealer to small red areas such as blemishes.
    • A green concealer is also very suitable for treating slightly larger red spots, such as moderate acne and irritation. Fair-skinned people often apply green concealer to the front of the nose, the center of the forehead, around the nostrils and along the cheekbones.
    • If you have scattered bright red areas covering most of your face, such as sunburned areas or rosacea, consider using a vegetable shade makeup primer. Tinted primer works in the same way as a color-correcting concealer, but provides an even skin tone for perfect foundation application.
  3. Add a layer of yellow to give ruddy skin an even complexion. Sometimes a green concealer works too well and your skin looks dull and dead.By choosing yellow instead of green, a warm color that is next to green in the color circle, you can partially hide red discoloration.
    • Yellow concealer is also a good choice for hiding light to moderately scattered red patches.
    • Yellow concealer also works well for some people to neutralize and lighten dark purple and blue discolorations such as new bruises, age spots, sun spots and bags under the eyes.
    • If this is your first time using concealer or foundation in a particular color, check out how it will look if you apply the makeup without using color correcting concealer. Many types of concealer and foundation intended for a lighter skin tone contain some yellow pigment, which has a color correcting effect.
  4. Use bright orange if your skin is darker in color. If you have a darker skin tone, orange can be used to correct many different types of discoloration, such as acne scarring and hyperpigmentation around the lips.
    • You can also apply orange all over your face to make your skin glow. If you want to apply an orange shade all over your face, consider using a little orange powder or primer instead of concealer.
    • Orange is also the color with which you can correct blue bags under your eyes if you have reasonably dark to dark skin.
    • If you have darker skin with many different shades, it is best to use two or more different shades of orange to correct colors. Apply a deep orange to darker areas of the skin and a lighter orange to lighter areas.
    • If you have lighter skin, you can use orange concealer as a bronzer to contour your face instead of correcting colors. On fair skin, orange often stands out too much to correct discoloration, but you can lighten the areas under your eyes with a light salmon color correcting concealer.
  5. Apply color corrector to a clean concealer brush. If you don't have a concealer brush, you can use another fine makeup brush. Dip your brush in the concealer or swipe over to apply concealer.
    • Color correcting concealer, like other concealer types, is available in the form of cream, liquid and powder.
    • If you are using powdered concealer, tap the box with the brush to remove the excess concealer.
    • Some types of liquid concealer are sold in a tube with an applicator. You can apply such a concealer on your skin and do not need to use a brush.
    • If you are using a concealer stick, you can sweep the brush over the concealer or apply the concealer right on your skin.
  6. Dab the concealer on the discolored area. Be careful not to apply too much. Make sure you don't apply the concealer too far from the edge of the discolored areas. Green neutralizes red, but can make a neutral complexion look sickly. Apply only a small amount of concealer to your skin. If you apply too much, you will have a visible, thick layer of makeup on your face that can crack.
    • Apply as little concealer as possible, and apply several coats to your face for better coverage.
  7. When choosing concealer, consider your skin type. Like regular concealers, color correcting concealers are available in a number of different thicknesses and textures. Which concealer you use largely depends on your personal preference, but some types work better on dry skin, oily skin, or combination skin.
    • Cream concealer is the best choice if you have dry skin. Such a concealer moisturizes your skin, prevents it from flaking and also has the best coverage.
    • A liquid concealer is the best choice if you have oily skin. It feels lighter on the skin, but may not completely cover darker blemishes and discoloration. Despite that, a liquid concealer works very well around the eyes. A primer is always liquid.
    • If you have combination skin, you can choose to use different types of concealer on different parts of your face. For example, you can apply liquid concealer on your oily T-zone and cream concealer on dry cheeks.
  8. Combine different types and colors of color correcting concealer if you are tackling multiple problems. If you have several skin concerns that you want to address, there is no reason to use just one type of color correcting concealer. Most people who use color correcting concealers use at least two at a time.
    • For example, if your skin is sallow, but you also have purple bags under your eyes and a few pimples, use at least three different color correctors. One possible makeup routine is to start with lavender primer before applying foundation. Then smooth peach concealer under your eyes and apply green concealer on your pimples.
  9. Remember to always wipe your makeup well to blend the colors nicely. If your makeup looks ugly and unnatural, it is often because the colors have not been rubbed out properly to blend in nicely. Foundation, concealer, bronzer, blush and eyeshadow all need to smudge and fade. Many makeup artists consider smearing and fading to be the most important step in applying makeup.
    • An important reason to use color correcting concealers is to avoid applying a lot of opaque foundation and concealer. Use fewer products if it looks like you have a thick layer of makeup on your face. Stick to thin, smoothly smeared layers instead of thick ones.
