Shaving your head is a sleek, stylish way to cut down on the daily hassle of personal care. After all, you no longer have to wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner, and you no longer have to style it. A shaved head is an attractive alternative for people who are going bald, or for people who want to give their look a rougher edge. Learn how to prepare your head for a shave, shave your head smoothly, and keep up with your shaved look.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Preparation

  1. Buy the supplies. If possible, invest in good quality shaving equipment. Good gear will give you a closer shave and reduce the number of nicks and scratches. You'll save money on shampoo and conditioner, so use that money to buy the following items:
    • Clippers. You will use clippers to shave your hair as short as possible before working with the razor. Good clippers can save you a lot of time and make shaving with a blade a lot more efficient.
    • A razor. Buy a good quality razor. A cheap knife can cause you to get all kinds of cuts if you are not careful. Some brands produce razor blades that are specially designed for shaving heads.
    • Shaving cream or oil. To shave your head well, it is important to rub your head well. You can use a foam, gel, or oil intended for your face or legs. You can also choose to buy a product that has been specially developed for the head. In any case, make sure that the product you use hydrates well.
    • Aftershave. Again, you can choose a product that is designed for the face or legs, but you can also take one that is specially designed for shaved heads.
  2. Ask a friend to help you, or decide you will do it yourself. There are pros and cons to both approaches. Keep the following in mind when shaving:
    • A friend can make sure to shave the back of your head and other areas that are not easy to see.
    • If you like the shaved look and want to keep it indefinitely, asking a friend every time you need to shave isn't practical. The sooner you start practicing, the sooner you can get yourself a good shave.
  3. Decorate your bathroom barber shop. Cover the floor with a rug or tarp, making sure the sink drain is closed. Shaving your head can cause a lot of mess, especially if you still have long (er) hair now.
  4. Trim your hair to 0.6 cm. The final step in preparation involves trimming your long hair so it doesn't clog your razor. Grab your clippers and set it to the shortest setting. Use your clippers to trim all of the hair on your head evenly down to 1/2 inch.

Method 2 of 3: Shave

  1. Wet your head and apply the shaving cream. Hold your head under the warm shower for a minute or two. That way your hair and scalp will be softer. Rub your head well with shaving cream, gel, or oil. Keep the bottle or can close to you so that you can reapply the product as needed.
  2. Start by shaving the front of your head. The hair close to the face is lighter and thinner, making those hairs easier to shave. Save the coarser hair on the back of your head for last, so that the shaving cream has enough time to soften those hairs.
    • Shave backward in equal strokes from your forehead.
    • Shave steadily and firmly. Don't press too hard, but apply enough pressure to ensure a close shave.
    • Rinse the blade as often as necessary to get the hair off.
  3. Shave the sides of your head. Work your way up your neck and shave the sides of your head.
    • Be careful when shaving behind your ears. Use one hand to keep the ear down so you can't cut it.
    • If you come across a crown, try shaving against the direction of hair growth.
  4. Shave the back of your head. Shave the part of your head that you cannot see with a steady hand. Work from your neck to the top of your head.
    • Be careful not to rush this process. Let the blade slide smoothly over all the ridges and valleys to avoid cutting yourself.
    • Use a hand mirror to check progress. Re-apply shaving cream as needed to complete the shave.
  5. Rinse your head. Wash away all hair and look at all sides of your head in the mirror.
    • If you missed a spot, reapply shaving cream. Shave the piece again.
    • Try to avoid having to shave your scalp twice. If you're using a good razor, one shave should be enough. If you pass it a second time, you will only irritate the scalp.
  6. Use aftershave. When you are satisfied with the result, pat your head dry and apply a moisturizing aftershave. This will soften any razor burn. It will also prevent the newly exposed skin from drying out.

Method 3 of 3: Maintenance

  1. Wash with mild soap or shampoo. There is no point in using an expensive shampoo on a bald head. It is therefore better to wash your scalp with a soap or less expensive shampoo. Just make sure it doesn't have any drying properties. Your scalp is more sensitive than the rest of your body.
  2. Moisturize the scalp regularly. It's important to keep protecting your scalp with a moisturizing lotion. After all, your scalp is no longer protected from the dry air (and the other elements) by a layer of hair.
  3. Use sunscreen or wear a hat. Your shaved scalp is susceptible to a terrible sunburn, especially if you shave your head for the first time. Make sure you apply plenty of sunscreen and wear a hat if you live in a place where there is a lot of sun.
  4. Shave regularly. If you want to keep your shaved look, it is wise to shave new hair once a week. You will now be able to do this much faster than the first time.

Tips

  • If you've never shaved your head, realize that your head will be significantly paler than the rest of your skin. You can prevent this by removing the longest hair a few weeks before shaving everything off. Trim your hair to 0.6cm so that the sun can reach your skin.
  • To make your clippers last longer, you can brush the hairs out of your blade. Then turn the clippers over and put a drop of oil between the particles of the blade that are touching each other. Turn the clippers over again and store them in a dry place.
  • If acne marks appear on your head after shaving, it can usually be controlled with the use of a cream or gel containing 2.5% benzoyl peroxide. Apply these before applying your aftershave.
  • Experiment with the frequency. Shaving your head too often can cause skin irritation. If you don't shave often enough (less than once every 2 (or more) weeks), then you probably need to grab the clippers every time.
  • Shaving with a razor blade works best when you just got out of a hot shower. Soap makes hair softer, and the warm water takes care of that too.Rinse some hot water on your face and head before getting out of the shower. Don't dry your head either.

Warnings

  • Don't use chemical hair removers on your head. These products are extremely powerful and not suitable for the scalp. It is also dangerous if it gets into your eyes.
  • Keep a washcloth within reach. If the shaving cream starts running down your forehead, wipe it off immediately so it doesn't get in your eyes.
