Dyeing your hair is a great way to change your look, but hair dye can damage your hair. Plus, you have to put in a lot of effort and keep updating your hair. If you just want to enhance your natural hair color, try a punk color like blue, or just want a different hair color for a costume, there are a lot of options you can try. Keep in mind that the result is usually not permanent because you are not using real hair dye.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Improve your natural hair color

  1. Use coffee and conditioner to darken your hair. Place 500 ml of leave-in conditioner in a bowl. Stir in 2 tablespoons (10 grams) of ground coffee and 250 ml of brewed coffee at room temperature. Apply the mixture to your hair, wait an hour, then rinse it out with warm water. To ensure that the color stays in your hair, rinse it afterwards with apple cider vinegar. Finally, let your hair air dry.
    • The stronger you brew the coffee, the darker the color will become. Espresso is even better to use. Do not put milk and sugar in the coffee.
    • For best results, use white conditioner. You can also use regular conditioner or a hair mask.
    • You may be able to give lighter hair a dark brown color with this method.
    • The color is not permanent and only lasts for 2 to 3 washes in your hair. However, you can apply the coffee mixture more often so that the color lasts longer in your hair.
  2. Use tea to enhance your natural hair color. Make tea with 3 to 5 tea bags and 500 ml of water. Let the tea cool completely before applying it to your hair. Pour the tea over your hair or mix it with 500ml of conditioner. Let the tea or mixture sit in your hair for an hour, then rinse your hair with warm water. Just like with coffee, the color of the tea only lasts for 2 to 3 washes in your hair.
    • Use black tea if you want to darken your hair or hide gray hair.
    • Use rooibos or hibiscus tea if you want to bring out the reds better.
    • Try chamomile tea if you want to brighten blonde hair or lighten light brown hair.
  3. Soak herbs in water to enhance your natural hair color or highlight light areas. Soak 1 to 2 tablespoons (5 to 10 grams) of the herbs of your choice in 500 ml of water for half an hour. Strain the mixture into a spray bottle and then spray it on your hair until it is damp. Like coffee and tea, this is not permanent and the color will only stay in your hair for 2 to 3 washes.
    • Use marigold, hibiscus, marigolds or rose hips to bring out reds. Let your hair air dry in the sun and then rinse with warm water,
    • For dark hair, use crushed walnut shells, nettles, rosemary, or sage. Let the mixture sit in your hair for an hour before rinsing it with warm water. You do not have to sit in the sun.
    • To brighten up blond hair, use marigold, chamomile, marigolds, saffron, or sunflower. Pour the mixture over your hair and let it air dry, preferably in the sun. Then rinse your hair with warm water.
  4. Give your hair a red shade with beet juice or carrot juice. Simply pour 250 ml of beet or carrot juice over your hair and cover your hair with a plastic shower cap. Wait at least an hour and rinse your hair with warm water. Rinse it again with apple cider vinegar so that the color stays in your hair.
    • With beet juice you give your hair a reddish blonde, deep red or reddish brown color.
    • Carrot juice is better if you want a red-orange shade.
    • Repeat the process if the color is not dark enough. Remember that the color is not permanent and will not last longer than 2 or 3 washes.

Method 2 of 3: Give your hair an unnatural color

  1. Start with bleached, blonde or light brown hair for best results. Since the agents in this section are translucent, they will only add to the hair color you have now. That means the darker your hair, the less of the new color you will see.
    • Know that blue and red can mix with blonde and create a green or orange color.
  2. Mix unsweetened Kool-Aid with conditioner if you want to give all your hair an even color. Dissolve 3 sachets of unsweetened Kool-Aid in 250 ml of hot water. Stir the mixture through enough conditioner to soak your hair. Apply the mixture to your hair and then cover it with a plastic shower cap. Wait an hour and then rinse the mixture from your hair.
    • You can use a different kind of drink mix, but make sure you use an unsweetened variety. Your hair will get tacky otherwise.
    • This method usually lasts for several washes. If you can't get the color out of your hair, wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo.
    • For best results, use white conditioner. You don't have to shampoo your hair after this because the conditioner will already remove some of the residue.
  3. Dissolve Kool-Aid in water only if you want to dye the bottom part of your hair. Stir 2 sachets of Kool-Aid into 500 ml of hot water. Make a ponytail or two ponytails in your hair and then dip your hair in the mixture. Wait 10-15 minutes and take your hair out of the mixture. Pat your hair dry with a paper towel and let it air dry. Wash it afterwards with a mild sulfate-free shampoo.
    • It is important to wash your dyed hair afterwards to remove the residue. If you don't, you can stain your clothes.
    • If you have long, thick hair, you may need to prepare more "hair dye". Add 1 sachet of Kool-Aid for every additional 250 ml of water.
    • This is a temporary method and the color should be gone after a few washes. If not, use a clarifying shampoo.
  4. Mix some food coloring with conditioner as an alternative to Kool-Aid. Put enough white conditioner in a bowl to soak your hair and stir in some food coloring until you get the color you want. Apply the mixture to your hair as desired, wait about 40 minutes, then rinse with warm water. It is not necessary to use shampoo afterwards.
    • The color only lasts for 2 to 3 washes in your hair.
    • For a color that will last a little longer (about 2 weeks) in your hair, use a volume 20 developer. Read the package directions to find out how long to leave the product in your hair.
    • Don't use vegetable food coloring or you won't be able to get the color out of your hair. Instead, use regular food coloring.
  5. Apply food coloring to your hair yourself if you want an easy method. Put on plastic gloves, then use a hair dye brush to brush liquid food coloring onto strands of hair. Wait 5 to 10 minutes and then blow-dry your hair for a few minutes to warm it up and let the color soak into your hair. Rinse your hair with cool water and blow dry it completely.
    • Cover your hairline with oil or petroleum jelly so that you don't stain your skin.
    • Wear gloves when rinsing your hair as food coloring stains.
    • This color will last in your hair for about 2 to 3 washes. Each time you shampoo your hair, the color will fade slightly.

Method 3 of 3: Try other methods

  1. Try hair mascara if you want to create colored streaks in your hair or touch up your roots. Hair mascara is exactly what it seems: mascara, but for your hair. Application is easy. Just grab a thin section of hair and lightly brush the mascara brush through it.
    • Hair mascara is available in both natural and unnatural colors. It is opaque and thus can also be seen on dark-colored hair.
    • If you can't find the right shade to touch up your roots with, pick the shade that works best next. A darker shade looks more natural than a lighter shade.
    • Hair mascara stays in your hair for 1 or 2 washes.
  2. Use her chalk to give your hair bright colors. Dampen the section of hair you want to dye and then rub over it with hair chalk. Make sure to cover both the top and the bottom. Repeat this process as many times as you want to give your hair a color. Let your hair dry and comb it out. With heat, keep the chalk in your hair by using a curling iron or flat iron. You can also use a fixative spray to keep the color in your hair.
    • If you can't find hair crayons, you can also use pastels and eyeshadow. Both are available in unnatural colors.
    • Most hair dyes are translucent, but hair chalk is not, making it a great choice for dark hair.
    • This method is best used to create colored stripes, but you may also want to use the chalk to make it look like you dyed your hair. Know that the chalk can stain your clothes.
    • Hair chalk stays in your hair for 2-4 washes and can stain light-colored hair.
  3. Use colored hairspray as an alternative to chalk. Apply the hairspray to thin strands of dry hair. Let the hairspray dry and then brush your hair to finely chop thick pieces. Know that your hair can be a bit harsh afterwards.
    • Colored hairspray is available in a variety of unnatural colors, but there are also natural colors to choose from. It is very suitable for dark hair as it is opaque.
    • This method lasts about 2 to 4 washes, but can permanently color light-colored hair.
  4. For a wilder hairstyle, try colored hair gel. Hair gel makes your hair stiff and is best used to create spiky and other extreme hairstyles. Colored hair gel does the exact same thing, but it has a color. Simply apply the gel to your hair in the same way as regular gel.
    • Colored hair gel is usually available in unnatural colors, but you may also find gel in natural colors. It is opaque which makes it a great option for darker hair colors.
    • The gel lasts for about 1 to 2 washes. Know that it can stain lighter hair.
  5. Clamp extensions in your hair if you don't want to use products. Part your hair where the extension should go. Open the clip of the extension and slide it into your hair just below the parting. Close the clip and let your hair down. Use a full set of extensions to create an ombré look or loose extensions to create streaks in your hair.
    • Extensions can be obtained in almost any color, and in both natural and unnatural colors.
    • Full sets of extensions are usually sold in natural colors, while loose extensions often have unnatural colors.
    • For the most realistic appearance possible, choose extensions with human hair. However, if you're just doing this for fun, you can use synthetic extensions just fine.
    • You can style natural human hair extensions with a curling iron or flat iron. You can also use bleach and hair dye. You cannot style synthetic extensions.

Tips

  • Cover your hair with a plastic shower cap while the dye soaks into your hair. If you don't have a shower cap, wrap it tightly with a piece of plastic wrap.
  • Food coloring and Kool-Aid can stain. So it's a good idea to put on plastic gloves and spread petroleum jelly along your hairline.
  • Wash your hair with cool water and a sulfate-free shampoo to make the color last longer.
  • These methods are not a direct substitute for professional hair dye. If you want a more permanent color in your hair, consider using henna, a natural hair dye.
  • If possible, use white conditioner. Conditioner with a color can affect the color.

Warnings

  • Many of these methods can stain blonde hair because it is so lightweight. However, you can solve this problem by washing your hair with a clarifying shampoo.
