Paint or bleach can dry out your hair. Honey, on the other hand, has been known for centuries for its ability to restore your hair's natural moisture balance, while also lightening hair. Learn how to lighten your hair with honey and use it as a conditioner to get a lighter shade.

To step

Method 1 of 2: The honey treatment to lighten your hair

  1. Make the mixture. Since honey is so sticky, it helps to add a little water to loosen it up for easier application into your hair. Mix four parts honey with one part water or apple cider vinegar (which also works as a conditioner) in a bowl and stir until well mixed.
    • If you want a more drastic change, add a little hydrogen peroxide to the mixture. This makes the hair several shades lighter. Do not use peroxide if your hair is black or very dark brown, it can turn orange.
    • For a reddish blonde glow, you can add some henna powder, cinnamon or ground coffee to the mixture. Adding hibiscus leaves gives you a strawberry blonde glow.
  2. Let the mixture sit for 30-60 minutes.
  3. Apply the honey mixture to your hair. Place a towel over your shoulders to protect your clothes, and pour the honey mixture onto your head in small amounts at a time, using your fingers to massage it in. Keep pouring the honey over your hair until all of your hair is covered.
    • Maybe it's a good idea to put a towel on the bathroom floor, because that sticky honey is very difficult to clean up.
    • If you have added henna powder, do not use clothes or towels that should not stain.
  4. Cover your hair with plastic and let the honey soak in. Use a shower cap or some sheets of cling film. Leave it on for at least 2 hours.
    • If you have long hair that is hard to stick under the plastic, twist your hair into a bun and pin it down after applying the honey mixture, then put the plastic over it. Do not use metal pins if you have added henna.
    • If possible, let the honey soak overnight to make it even lighter. It immediately works as a very good conditioner. Put a towel on your pillow and sleep with a shower cap on.
    • You don't have to use a hairdryer or otherwise heat your hair. The honey works well at room temperature.
  5. Keep the honey in your hair overnight for much lighter results. The honey also works as a deep conditioning treatment if you leave it on for that long. Make sure you sleep with a shower cap on and a towel over your pillow.
    • Do not keep the honey in your hair overnight if you have added hydrogen peroxide to the mixture.
  6. Wash out the honey. Rinse it out with warm water, then shampoo and condition it as usual. Pat your hair dry and let it air dry or blow dry. Your hair is now honey colored.

Method 2 of 2: Honey conditioner for maintenance

  1. Mix 60 ml of honey with 120 ml of conditioner. You can use any conditioner you want as long as the scent combines well with honey. Stir until smooth.
    • Put leftover conditioner in an empty bottle for later use.
    • Use the same ratio to make a larger stock.
  2. Use the conditioner after every wash. After shampooing your hair, use the honey conditioner as you would your normal conditioner. Put some in your hair, and rinse if it is set.
    • Leave the conditioner on for 5-10 minutes while you shower, for even light hair.
    • If your hair feels sticky after rinsing, add a little more conditioner and a little less honey to your mixture.

Tips

  • Make sure to wash out the honey well.
  • Don't be disappointed if you don't see anything the first time; it sometimes needs a few treatments.
  • Honey works best on brown or blonde hair.
  • There are other natural products that can enhance bleaching. Two of these are lemon and cinnamon (note: cinnamon can cause a "hot" or "burning" sensation on the scalp. It won't burn your skin, but it can feel unpleasant).
  • Honey doesn't damage your hair like peroxide does, but it takes longer to see results.
