Jasmine rice is a highly fragrant long grain rice from Thailand with a slightly sticky texture. It also has a nutty flavor, which is an ideal alternative to plain white rice. Best of all, you can make jasmine rice quickly and easily in a rice cooker, just like you would with white rice. However, it is important to wash jasmine rice before cooking it so that you get rid of any dirt or starch that may be on the outside of the grains. That way you end up with tasty, fluffy rice to serve with your meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (185 g) of jasmine rice
  • 1 cup (240 ml) of water, plus more for soaking
  • ½ teaspoon (3 g) of salt (optional)

To step

Part 1 of 3: Washing the rice

  1. Place the rice in a bowl of water. Place one cup (185 g) of jasmine rice in a large bowl. Pour enough cold water over the rice to cover it completely.
  2. Stir the rice in the bowl with your hand to rinse it. Once the rice is covered in water, gently toss the rice for three to five minutes. The movement will help remove some of the dirt and starch on the outside of the rice, so you will notice the water getting cloudy.
    • Handle the rice gently while you tip it over in the water. You don't want to grind it or press it too hard with your hands.
  3. Drain the rice and add more water to the bowl. After stirring the rice for a few minutes, pour the contents of the bowl into a colander or strainer to remove the dirty water. Rinse the bowl, return the rice to the bowl and cover it again with clean, cold water.
  4. Repeat the rinsing process. Once the rice is covered with clean water, stir the rice into the water with your hands for another 2-3 minutes. Now the water should become less cloudy because less dirt and starch will come off the rice.
  5. Drain the water one last time. After you wash the rice a second time, throw the contents of the bowl back into the colander or strainer to drain the water. Shake the rice well to remove the excess moisture.
    • If the water still looks very cloudy after a second rinse, repeat the process one more time. Continue rinsing the rice until the water is mostly clear.

Part 2 of 3: Cooking the rice

  1. Add the rice and water to the rice cooker. When the jasmine rice is clean, place it in the pan of the rice cooker. Next, pour a cup (240 ml) of clean, cold water over the rice.
    • For jasmine rice, use a 1: 1 ratio of rice to water. You can increase the amounts of each depending on how many people you cook for. 1 cup (185 g) of jasmine rice and 1 cup (240 ml) of water makes 4-6 servings of rice.
  2. Stir in the salt. If you want to season the rice before it boils, add half a teaspoon (3 g) of salt to the rice cooker. Use a wooden spoon to stir it into the rice and water so that all ingredients are well mixed.
    • Adding the salt is an optional step. You can skip it if you wish.
  3. Let the rice soften for an hour. Once you've mixed the rice, water, and salt in the rice cooker, put the lid on and let the rice soak for about an hour. This will give the rice time to soften so that it has a better texture when it is done cooking.
  4. Cook the rice according to the rice cooker manufacturer's instructions. After you let the rice soften for about an hour, turn on the rice cooker. Refer to the rice cooker instructions to choose the best setting for the rice and let it cook for the specified time.
    • Most rice cookers have a preset program that automatically switches off the appliance according to your chosen setting. Generally, however, jasmine rice should be cooked in a rice cooker for about 25 minutes.

Part 3 of 3: Finishing the rice

  1. Let the rice rest for at least 10 minutes. When the jasmine rice is done cooking, turn off the rice cooker. However, you may not remove the rice from the machine yet. Instead, let it rest in the rice cooker for 10 to 15 minutes.
    • Leave the lid on the stove while the rice is resting.
  2. Loosen the rice. When the rice has rested for a few minutes, use a wooden spatula to loosen the rice slightly. This will help remove any residual moisture and give the rice a fluffier texture.
  3. Transfer the rice to a bowl and serve. After you have loosened the jasmine rice, use the spatula to gently transfer the rice to a bowl.Serve the rice while it is still warm with your favorite main dish.

Tips

  • Do not remove the lid from the rice cooker to check the jasmine rice while cooking. That can slow down the cooking process or produce glutinous rice.
