Content

With Fast Switch in Counter-Strike, you can instantly choose your weapon by pressing the corresponding number key on your keyboard, without having to confirm that you have selected the weapon first. This feature can be activated via the "developer console", and on some versions via the menu. In Counter-Strike: Global Operations (CS: GO), this feature has been activated from the beginning and cannot be deactivated.

To step

Part 1 of 2: Activating the console

  1. Activate the "developer console". You can enter commands into this console that change the game, including the command to activate "fast switch". The console is turned off by default.
    • CS: GO - Open the "Options" menu and click "Game Settings". At "Enable Developer Console", click "Yes". Note that Fast Switch is enabled by default in CS: GO and cannot be disabled.
    • CS: Source - Open the "Options" menu and click "Advanced". Check the "Enable developer console (~)" box. In this screen you can also check "Fast weapon switch" and activate it without having to use commands entered through the console.
  2. Press on the .~key to open the console. You don't have to be playing to open it.
    • This can cause problems with keyboards with a French layout. If you are unable to open the console and you are using a French layout keyboard, you will need to switch layouts when you play.
  3. Force opening the console if you cannot get it to work. If you are unable to open the console, you may need to force the console to open by linking it to the game's shortcut:
    • Right-click on the game in your Steam library and click "Properties".
    • Click "Set start options" in "General".
    • Type console in the field. The console will appear as soon as the game is started.

Part 2 of 2: Activating Fast Switch

  1. Open the console if it is not already open. If you haven't opened the console in the previous section, you should press ~ to open it. It will appear as a small screen in Counter-Strike.
    • You don't have to be playing to activate "fast switch", but it can help if you want to test something.
  2. Type.hud_fastswitch 1and press↵ Enter. This will activate fast switch so that you draw the selected weapon as soon as you press the corresponding number key.
    • Remember that with CS: GO this function is activated by default and cannot be deactivated. There is no need to enter a fast switch command in CS: GO.
  3. Test it out. Press one of the number keys assigned to your weapons (usually 1-4). Your weapon will be drawn instantly without having to confirm with a second click. If you have more than one type of grenade you will still have to select the one you want to use.
  4. Deactivate it if you don't like it. If you can't get used to fast switch, you can deactivate it with about the same command:
    • Open the console and type hud_fastswitch 0 to deactivate fast switch.
  5. Turn your mouse wheel into something that allows you to quickly switch weapons. Many players find it a waste of time in combat to use the mouse wheel to scroll through all three weapons and grenades. You can bind mouse wheel up and mouse wheel down to your first and second weapon, allowing you to switch weapons in the middle of a fight without moving your fingers:
    • Open the console by pressing ~ to push.
    • Type bind wheelup slot1 and press ↵ Enter. This will automatically switch to your first weapon by scrolling up with your mouse wheel.
    • Type bind wheeldown slot2 and press ↵ Enter. This will automatically switch to your gun by scrolling down with your mouse wheel.

Tips

  • In Counter Strike Source, this option can be checked in "advanced options" in the configuration menu of your keyboard.
  • If you have more than one grenade type, pressing 4 will not automatically switch to the grenade - you will still need to manually confirm and select which one to use.
  • There is no such thing as a "no-animation reload". Switching weapons after firing will not show the reload animation, but you will still not be able to fire until the normal duration of the animation that would otherwise have been shown has passed.
