This wikiHow teaches you how to find out where north is in Google Maps, using an internet browser on your desktop.

To step

  1. Open your internet browser. You can use any browser, such as Firefox, Chrome, Safari or Opera.
  2. Go to Google Maps in your browser. Type maps.google.com in the address bar and press ↵ Enter or ⏎ Return on your keyboard.
  3. Find a location on the map. You can search for a location with the Searchbar at the top left, or by pressing the "+’ and '-’ clicking at the bottom right, to zoom in and zoom out.
    • The orientation of Google Maps is always the same in the Satellite and Map modes. North can be found at the top of the screen, and South at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Drag the orange figure to a desired location on the map. Look for the orange Pegman icon in the lower right corner and place it on the location of the map you want to explore. This will switch you to Street View mode.
  5. Note the direction of the compass needle. Look for the compass icon in the lower right corner of Street View, and note the direction of the red needle. The red needle always points north.
