If you want to avoid being attacked by other users targeting your IP address, or simply want a new online identity from an IP point of view, changing your IP address can be useful. You can change the IP address on the Mac at any time in System Preferences.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Change the IP address

  1. Click on the Apple logo and select “System Preferences”.
  2. Click on the “Network” icon.
  3. In the left sidebar of the System Preferences window, click the type of network you are using. For example, click on “wifi” if you are using a wireless internet connection.
  4. Click on the button “Advanced ...”At the bottom right of the System Preferences window.
  5. Click on the “TCP / IP” tab.
  6. Click the drop-down menu next to “Configure IPv4” and select “Via DHCP with manual address”.
    • You can also choose to click “Renew DHCP Lease” to have your computer automatically generate new IP addresses for you.
  7. Enter the desired IP address in the field marked “IPv4 Address”.
  8. Click on “OK” and then on “Apply”. Your IP address will now be changed.

Method 2 of 2: Using a proxy server

  1. Click on the Apple logo and select “System Preferences”.
  2. Click on the “Network” icon.
  3. In the left sidebar of the System Preferences window, click the type of network you are using.
  4. Click on “Advanced ...”And then on the“ Proxies ”tab.
  5. Place a check mark next to the desired protocol under “Choose a protocol to configure”.
    • Select the protocol “SOCKS Proxy” if you are not sure which protocol to choose. The protocol "SOCKS Proxy" is often used to send "packets" via a proxy between clients and servers. In addition, the protocol is effective in promoting overall security and hiding application client addresses.
  6. Enter the IP address of the desired proxy server in the empty field at the top of the System Preferences window.
    • If you are using a SOCKS proxy, you can go to the SOCKS proxy list on [1] to select a type 4 or type 5 IP address.
  7. Click on “OK” and then on “Apply”. You will now be connected to the specified proxy server.

Tips

  • If you want to block or mask your current IP address, consider using a proxy server instead of changing your IP address. Know that with a proxy server you may lose connection speed, but that you keep your online identity anonymous without having to change your IP address.
