Cutting hair straight is easy, but there are some bad habits that make the bottom edge uneven and you can't cut your hair nicely straight and tight. Cutting your own hair can be exciting and fun, but you're also more likely to make mistakes. If this is your first time cutting your hair, make sure you buy a good pair of hairdressing scissors and cut less hair than you actually want. Remember that you can always cut more if you want shorter hair, but you cannot lengthen your hair if you cut too many.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Cut your own hair

  1. Comb your hair so that it is free of knots and tangles. You can start with dry or damp hair. This method is especially recommended for people with straight hair. If you have wavy or curly hair, make sure your hair is wet before you start cutting.
  2. Create a low ponytail in your hair. Part your hair in the middle. Make a low ponytail in the bottom of your neck and secure the tail with a hair tie. Make sure to create a neat, smooth ponytail and that all hair is tied with the rubber band.
  3. Attach a rubber band a few inches below the first rubber band. Smooth out your ponytail as best you can and tie another rubber band around it. Depending on how long your hair is and how short you want to cut it, you may have to tie a third elastic under the second.
    • By tying rubber bands around your hair you have control before and during the cut.
  4. Hold the ponytail between your fingers where you want to cut it. Make a V shape with your index and middle fingers, then wrap your fingers around the ponytail. Run your fingers down to where you want to cut the hair.
    • The bottom edge of your hair will curl a little. If you want to cut your hair straighter, slide your fingers further down so that you have more hair and can make adjustments.
  5. Trim your ponytail under your fingers. Use sharp hairdressing scissors for this and no ordinary scissors. Slowly and carefully cut a little bit off your hair at a time.
  6. Remove the ponytail and check the shape. Turn around so that your back is to the mirror and hold another mirror up in front of you. The bottom edge of your hair will be slightly curved or curved. If you don't think this is right enough, move on to the next step.
  7. Remove the elastic from your hair and part it in the middle. Part the bottom of your neck as if you were making two tails. Place the left side of your hair over your left shoulder and the right side over your right shoulder. Keep the tufts on the back of your head to the outer edges as much as possible.
  8. Grab your hair between your fingers again. Choose a side to start with: left or right. Grab the hair from that side and grab it between your index and middle fingers the same way you did with your ponytail before.
  9. Slide your fingers down and tilt them slightly. Run your fingers down the section of hair to where you want to cut the hair. Tilt your fingers up slightly so that your fingertips are pointing up towards your shoulder. This way you will be able to cut the hair on the back of your head shorter. When you comb out your hair, it will be the same length all over.
    • Make sure that the hairs that used to be on the back of your head are now on the outside of the section, next to your shoulder.
  10. Cut the hair under your fingers in the same way as before. Keep your hand and your hair close to your shoulder while cutting. If you have very thick hair, you will need to divide the section into smaller sections. Measure the length of the next section according to the previous section.
  11. Repeat the process on the other side of your hair. To make sure that you cut all your hair to the same length, it is a good idea to measure the hair that has not yet been cut by the hair already cut. Grab the inner strands of both the left and right sections of your hair. Check with your fingers how long the already cut strands are compared to the uncut strands.

Method 2 of 2: Cutting someone else's hair

  1. Start with wet hair. You don't have to wash the other person's hair with shampoo and conditioner, but it should be wet. Have the person sit on a high chair so that the hair is at a height where you can cut it easily.
  2. Make a bun in the top 75% of the hair. Use the handle of a pointed comb to make a neat parting, then make a bun on top of the head. Secure the hair in the bun with clips or a hair tie so that it does not get in the way. Let the lower part of the hair hang down.
  3. Grab a section of hair from the bottom section with your fingers. Make a V shape with your index and middle fingers. Wrap your fingers around a section of hair 2 to 5 centimeters wide.
    • You can also use a pointed comb to measure the strands. This will prevent you from accidentally pulling the hair too hard.
  4. Run your fingers down on the section to where you want to cut the hair. Keep your hand against the person's back and avoid cutting the hair at an angle by pulling the section away from the other's back. Your fingers should be parallel to the floor and the parting you made earlier.
    • Do not turn your fingers up, turn the section over or pull the section away from the other person's back. As a result, the hair will be cut slightly diagonally.
  5. Cut the hair under your fingers. Use the length of your fingers as a guide. Make sure to use sharp hairdressing scissors for cutting, not regular scissors.
  6. Take another section and compare the length with the section that you have already cut. Grab a section of hair about 1 inch wide. Add some hair from the section you have already cut. Hold the section between your index and middle fingers as before. Let your fingers slide down on the section until the bottom edge is level with the already cut section.
  7. Cut the hair and then treat the next section. Cut the section until it is the same length as the already cut section. Let go of the hair and take another section. Compare the new section with the old section and cut it off. Continue in this manner until you have cut the bottom layer of hair completely.
    • Never pull the strands away from the person's back while cutting. Keep them as close to the other person's back as possible.
    • Measure the left and right sides at the front to make sure they are the same length.
  8. Take down the next layer of hair. Use the handle of the pointed comb to make a neat horizontal parting again. Make sure you leave enough hair so that you can see the previous layer partly through the new layer. Make another bun in the rest of the hair.
  9. When cutting, compare the length of the top layer with that of the bottom layer. Take a section of hair 2 to 5 inches wide from the new layer. Add a thin section of the bottom layer. Hold the strand between your fingers and slide your fingers down until they are level with the already cut strand. Cut the new section under your fingers just as before.
  10. Cut the rest of the hair using the same techniques. Compare new ones with old ones, and new layers with old ones. Always keep your hand close to the person's back and don't pull the hair away from the other's back. Keep going until you have finished cutting the other person's hair.
  11. Dry the other person's hair and then make any necessary adjustments. If you wish, you can wash the other person's hair to remove small clippings of hair. Blow-dry the other person's hair and trim off any protruding strands.

Tips

  • Do not turn the strands of hair upwards to cut them, otherwise you will get serrated hair and the hair will be cut at an angle.
  • Keep your hand close to the person's shoulder or back during the cut.
  • It is not recommended to cut curly and wavy hair straight due to the unique shape of each curl.
  • If you have curly or wavy hair and want to straighten it, do this before cutting it.
  • Cut too little if in doubt. You can always cut more hair later. If you cut too much hair, you will have to wait for your hair to grow back.
  • If you cut your own hair, consider buying a three-part mirror. This will allow you to easily see the back of your head without having to hold a second mirror.
