Glycerin, also called glycerol, is a thick, clear, and fragrance-free liquid that is used in many beauty products. Glycerine is a humectant, which means that it draws in moisture from the environment around it. Applying glycerin to dry hair helps hair retain moisture. You can make a glycerin spray and hair mask with glycerin, or even add glycerin to your conditioner.

To step

Method 1 of 4: Making a glycerin spray

  1. Put ½ cup of distilled water in a spray bottle. Use a spray bottle with an adjustable nozzle. Obviously you don't want to spray a concentrated amount on a small part of your hair, but a soft mist over all your locks. Add ½ cup (120 ml) of distilled water to the spray bottle. Distilled water is better than tap water, which contains minerals that can dry out your hair.
  2. Add ½ cup of rose water to the bottle, if desired. Rose water has a wonderful scent that keeps your hair smelling great all day long. Add ½ cup (120 ml) of rose water to the spray bottle with the distilled water, if desired. If you don't want to use rose water, you can add a few drops of your favorite essential oil, such as lavender or orange, to make the hairspray smell like that.
    • You can buy rose water at drugstores, department stores, and online.
  3. Add 2 teaspoons of vegetable glycerin and 1 teaspoon of olive oil. Choose a vegetable glycerine obtained from, for example, coconut oil or shea butter. Add 2 teaspoons (10 ml) of vegetable glycerin and 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of olive oil to the spray bottle to complete this remedy.
    • Vegetable glycerin can be found at the local drugstore, department store, and online.
  4. Shake the bottle and spray the mixture on damp hair. Shake the bottle thoroughly before use to mix the oil and glycerin with the other ingredients. Then spray the mixture on your hair while it is still damp from bathing or showering. Use enough to cover your hair lightly, but not so much that it becomes sticky or difficult to style.
    • Experiment with different amounts until you get the perfect amount for your hair type.
  5. Comb through your hair and then style it as usual. To distribute the glycerin spray evenly throughout your hair, run a wide tooth comb through your hair from root to tip. Then style your hair as usual.
  6. If you prefer, you can refresh your hair with the spray mid-day. You can use this glycerin hairspray when getting ready in the morning and throughout the day to refresh your locks and tame flyaways. Spray a small amount of the mixture on your hair and comb through for straight hair, or use your fingers to reshape your curls.

Method 2 of 4: Make a hair mask with glycerine

  1. Mix 1 egg and 2 tablespoons of castor oil in a small bowl. Beat an egg in a small bowl to make a moisturizing hair mask. Then add 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of castor oil to the bowl and stir the mixture.
    • Castor oil can be found in the local department store and online.
  2. Add 1 teaspoon of glycerine and apple cider vinegar. Place 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of glycerine and 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of apple cider vinegar in the bowl. Mix the solution thoroughly until all ingredients are combined and smooth.
    • You can optionally add 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of honey to the mask.
  3. Apply the mask to your hair and massage it in. Use your hands or a pastry brush to apply this moisturizing hair mask to your strands. Make sure it is evenly distributed from roots to tips. Massage the mixture gently into your hair.
    • You can repeat this treatment once or twice a week.
  4. Wrap your hair in a warm towel and let the mask sit for 40 minutes. Heat a towel in the sun or in your dryer and then wrap it around your hair. The heat helps the ingredients in the mask penetrate your hair. Leave the mask on for 40 minutes.
  5. Wash your hair. Use a mild shampoo that doesn't contain parabens or sulfates, which can damage your newly moisturized locks. There is no need to use a conditioner in your hair - the mask has already taken care of that!

Method 3 of 4: Add glycerine to your conditioner

  1. Put 10 ml glycerine in a 50 ml conditioner bottle. Remove the cap from the conditioner bottle and place a small funnel in the top opening of the bottle. Gently pour 10 ml of glycerine through the funnel into the conditioner bottle.
    • If the conditioner bottle is larger or smaller than 50 ml, adjust the amount of glycerin as well.
  2. Shake the bottle thoroughly. Put the cap back on the bottle. Shake the bottle thoroughly before each use to make sure the conditioner and glycerin are mixed.
  3. Condition your hair as usual. You can use this improved product just like you use the normal conditioner. Simply apply it to your hair after rinsing out your shampoo. Leave it on for a few minutes and then rinse. You can then style your hair as usual.

Method 4 of 4: Using glycerin effectively

  1. Check the humidity for the day. If the air in your environment is very dry, instead of drawing moisture from the air into your hair, the glycerin can do the opposite and release moisture from your hair into the air. If the air is too humid, your hair can swell and retain too much moisture, which can make it frizzy. So if the humidity is significantly above or below average, use less glycerine than usual.
  2. Dilute glycerine with water before using it on your hair. Glycerine is a very thick and viscous substance. If you apply undiluted glycerin to your hair, you probably have a sticky mess. Always dilute glycerin with water or other hair-safe liquids, such as conditioner, before applying.
  3. Choose naturally obtained glycerine. Glycerin can come from vegetable products such as coconut oil and shea butter, as well as animal fats. It can also be made synthetically. However, there may be some health risks associated with synthetic glycerin, so until more information is available on these risks, you should avoid using synthetic glycerin.

Tips

  • Glycerin can also soothe dry skin on your scalp and reduce dandruff.

Warnings

  • Do not use glycerin on your hair if it is colored with a semi-permanent dye, as the glycerin can cause your color to fade faster.
