Many people like to experiment with their appearance. Some do it for Halloween costumes or for the theater, and some transgender men do it to present themselves as men to the world. Fortunately, there are a number of clever tactics for adapting the female body to what is commonly thought of as a man's appearance.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Change clothes

  1. Find simple or printed T-shirts that you like. While women are expected to combine different tops, many men tend to reach for the T-shirt. Simple, easy to clean and attracts little attention. Since this is a safe choice to present yourself as a man, it's easier to have some fun picking shirts that match your interests.
    • Many men wear T-shirts from their favorite bands, or with artwork from their favorite TV shows and movies.
    • If you want to look athletic, buy plain white, gray, or black shirts. Sportswear can also be a good choice for a sporty, masculine look.
  2. Buy some low-profile pants. Most men wear blue jeans, navy trousers and khakis. To save money, go to the department store, or maybe a thrift store, and get a few different pants. These give you a solid foundation for creating multiple boyish or masculine outfits.
    • Make sure to choose pants that are comfortable.
    • Nowadays, skinny jeans are increasingly being worn by men, and they can be a great fit for your new look. Keep in mind that they enhance your figure (leg muscles) and can potentially betray your gender. These can be great for muscular women or gender-unattached people who want to embrace their multiple self-presentation.
  3. Wear comfortable sports shoes. In general, flats, heels and sandals are seen as feminine. Men are more likely to be seen in sports shoes (high, medium and low), boat shoes, boots, moccasins and loafers. Do you want a sporty look, or just business? Knowing the answer to this question can help you find the right shoes for yourself.
    • Skateboard shops, department stores and brand stores are good places to find fashionable masculine shoes.
    • If you are wearing formal attire, make sure you are wearing dress shoes. It is best to have them polished so that there are no stains in the material.
  4. Wear a baseball cap. Considered by some to be the "crown of the common man," the baseball cap gives you a sporty, relaxed look that complements many men's clothing styles.
    • Do you have a favorite sports team? Or just a city you love and want to represent? Answering these questions can help you find a fun new accessory.
    • The way you wear your hat - forwards, backwards, at an angle, upwards - can convey different things about your personality and make your new masculine look more expressive.
    • Know that sports fans can respond to you based on mutual support or rivalry.
  5. Wear a backpack. While they are undeniably worn by both men and women, women are more likely to carry a purse. Trading in a wallet or purse for a simple backpack can contribute to a simple masculine look.
  6. Wear a suit with a tie. For formal, business and even festive occasions, it is appropriate to wear a suit and tie. Whether this is a simple blazer and overcoat, or a tailored tuxedo, suits are an easy way to achieve a masculine look.
    • Transforming the female body into a masculine look often means narrowing the hips and broadening the shoulders. Consider getting jackets with shoulder pads to accentuate a seemingly masculine body.
    • Flashy colors such as green, pink and teal are extremely uncommon for men to wear. To pass for a man, you better opt for suits in navy blue tones. Pants are typically khaki and navy blue. There is more leeway with ties. Something to ask yourself is how much you want to stand out. For example, Neil deGrasse Tyson often wears eccentric ties and gets some attention for them. On the other hand, your run-of-the-mill businessman can usually be seen on the street wearing a paisley, striped, or plain tie.
  7. Carry a suitcase. If you are older, or just want to have a more mature look, suitcases are a classic symbol of the businessman. Traditionally, leather cases have been the standard choice for professionals. However, shoulder bags and backpacks (bicycle bags) are steadily gaining popularity among young professional men.

Method 2 of 3: Change your physical appearance

  1. Cut your hair. While there are quite a few men who choose to grow their hair long, this is largely considered a feminine trait (at least in European-American culture). Common male hairstyles include the crew cut, side part, fade, faux hawks, shape-ups and waves.
    • View the professional photo books in hairdressing salons and choose a style that appeals to you.
    • Often times, it is easier to look at male celebrities to determine what kind of hairstyle is right for you or what you look like fun.
  2. Put on a wig and a wig cap. There's no need to shave or even just cut your hair, especially if you want to wear it loose at other times. If you have long hair, you will need to braid and pin it. Then place a wig cap over your head and secure it to the hair with pins. Once this is done you can wear any wig of your choice.
  3. | Tie off your chest. Breasts are a direct physical trait that lets people know that you are a woman. To change your appearance - especially for those women with a rounder figure - using a binder will help you create a flatter, masculine chest.
    • There are companies that make binders especially for transsexuals.
    • Do not use a bandage or duct tape to tie off as this can cause scarring, restrict breathing, and cause fluid to build up in your lungs (among other possible injuries).
    • Do not wear a binder for 24 hours in a row. 8-12 hours is a safe maximum for tying.
    • Do not wear a binder that is too small for you.
  4. Buy appropriate underwear. If you find binders too much of a good thing, or simply unnecessary thanks to your measurements, sports bras are also suitable for making breasts less visible and creating a masculine appearance.
  5. Don't wear makeup. While it may seem possible to use it to your advantage to give your face a masculine look, in the end the mere presence of makeup on a man (or someone who dresses up as a man) will eventually attract negative attention.
    • If you absolutely want to use makeup for your transformation, try a small amount of brown or dark eyeliner to fill in your brows.
  6. Consider hormone treatment. For those transgender people looking for a serious physical transition, this could be the next big step in their lives. It is advisable to follow hormone treatment only under the supervision of a primary care physician and a primary care psychologist. Make sure you educate yourself about health protocols for your health as a transgender before you seriously pursue this.

Method 3 of 3: Act like a man

  1. Change your voice. Pitch and pronunciation can greatly help convey a gender other than your own. While common sense says that a lower voice indicates masculinity, research shows it has more to do with two things: the pronunciation of the 's' and the presence of a vocal fry. If you have a high voice, don't tire yourself out speaking like a baritone. Instead, aim for a slightly lower, more monotonous version of your natural voice.
    • The presence of some lisp or softness in the 's' is characteristic of feminine speech patterns.
    • "Vocal fry" refers to the creaking, deeper, elongated vowels at the end of your sentence. This is also a hallmark of feminine speech patterns and is best avoided if you want to present yourself as a boy or a man.
  2. Avoid feminine body language and habits. For example: crossing your legs, blinking your eyes and playing with your hair.
    • If you're aiming for a masculine look with long hair, don't throw your hair over your shoulder or spend too much time touching your neck.
    • When you sit, lean back and let your legs spread slightly apart.
    • Do not let your wrist slack too often or expose your wrist too often. For example, when women smoke cigarettes, they sometimes hold their hand with the wrist turned outward and visible. Men are more likely to turn their wrist down or keep their arm by their side.
    • A safe position is to put your hands in your pockets, as this is much more common in men than women.
  3. Use the typical masculine greetings. While it's not uncommon socially for men to hug each other, it might be better to greet with different variations of hand shaking and high-fives.
    • When you shake someone's hand, give a firm hand (without hurting the other person) and maintain eye contact to appear confident, friendly.
    • When you are going to high-five, aim at the elbow to avoid a missed hit that might seem a bit strange.
  4. Speak to convey information. Research shows that women often speak with the intention of creating connection and group sense, while men speak more to convey information and determine status.
    • If you find this difficult, consider assertiveness training, as this is a trait that is respected among men.
  5. Spend time with male friends. In the process of presenting yourself as a man, we can get stuck in socially conditioned ideas of "what a man is like". The truth is, there is no one right way. And a great way to find out how to present yourself comfortably as a man is to interact with men or boys and observe their personality and behavior.
    • If you have good male friends who are easy to talk to, talk to them about your attempts to present yourself as a man and see what solutions you can come up with together.

Tips

  • Add 21 to your waist measurement to convert your size to a man's.
  • Make sure to remove all nail polish and makeup with wet wipes before going outside.
  • In general, it is natural to wear clothes that are one or two sizes larger than what actually fits your body.
  • If you are a transgender person in need of support, there are a number of helpful resources available to you, including Trans Lifeline, The Trevor Project, Trans People of Color Coalition, and National Center for Transgender Equality.

Warnings

  • Be aware that some people are intolerant and take offense at transgender people or anyone who disregards society's gender "rules". If you feel threatened, seek protection and / or call the police.
