This wikiHow teaches you how to access your password-locked Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet by using the Samsung "Find My Mobile" site or by performing a hard reset. Unfortunately, it is not possible to recover a forgotten password from your phone or tablet in Android Nougat yourself. Performing a hard reset will erase your Samsung Galaxy data.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Using the Samsung website

  1. Open the "Find My Mobile" website. Go to https://findmymobile.samsung.com/ in your browser. You can unlock your Samsung Galaxy from this website if you are logged into your Galaxy with your Samsung account.
    • If you are not logged into your Galaxy with your Samsung account, you will need to perform a factory reset.
  2. click on SIGN UP. This is a blue button in the center of the page.
    • If you are already signed in to Find My Mobile, skip this and the next step.
  3. Enter your Samsung credentials. Enter your email address and password, then click SIGN UP to do this.
  4. click on Unlock my device. This is on the left side of the page.
    • If you have more than one Samsung Galaxy item, you may need to select the correct one by clicking the item name in the top left corner of the page and then selecting the correct one from the drop-down menu.
  5. Enter your Samsung password again if prompted. When prompted, you will need to re-enter your Samsung account password. This should unlock your Samsung Galaxy, although you may have to wait a few seconds for the item to recognize the unlock.
    • After the screen is unlocked you should be able to set a new password in the menu Settings.

Method 2 of 2: Using a factory reset

  1. Understand how a factory reset works. Resetting your Samsung Galaxy will completely erase files, data and settings, including the passcode. This means that you can access and use your Samsung Galaxy again, but there are no files (eg Photos) on your Samsung Galaxy.
    • All data synced to your account may be recoverable after signing back into your Samsung Galaxy after resetting it. If so, the data will be recovered automatically.
  2. Press and hold the power button. This is usually in the top right corner of the Samsung Galaxy, although you may find it at the top of some tablets. A menu will appear.
  3. Tap on Restarting. This is a green image of a circular arrow. Your Samsung Galaxy will start to reboot itself.
    • If you're on Switch off you will be asked to enter the password. Instead, you have to reboot.
  4. Press and hold the Power, Volume Up and Lock buttons. Do this immediately after you get on Reboot and do not release them until you reach the "Recovery" screen, which resembles a white Android logo on a light blue screen.
    • The Lock button is the non-volume button on the left side of the Galaxy.
  5. Release the buttons. Once you get to the recovery screen, release the buttons and wait for the black recovery console to appear. This may take several minutes.
  6. Choose wipe data / factory reset. Press the Volume Down button until this option is selected (usually four presses is enough).
  7. Press the on button. Doing this will confirm your selection of the option wipe data / factory reset.
  8. Choose Yes when asked to do so. To do this, use the volume up button or the volume down button.
  9. Press the power button again. This will prompt your Samsung Galaxy to erase itself.
  10. Restart the Samsung Galaxy. Once the Samsung Galaxy has finished restoring, you will be back at the recovery console screen; press and hold the power button to reboot your Samsung Galaxy.
    • From here you can set up the Samsung Galaxy as a brand new phone or tablet.

Tips

  • On some older Samsung Galaxy items connected to Gmail, you can reset the password after entering your PIN incorrectly five times by pressing the Forget - option at the bottom of the screen, enter your Gmail email address and password, and tap Sign Up. This will not work on Nougat Android items such as the Samsung Galaxy S8.

Warnings

  • You probably won't be able to recover most of your deleted files and information from your Samsung Galaxy after performing a factory reset.
