You no longer have to wonder what that little scrub brush behind the toilet is for. The toilet brush is used to clean the inside of your toilet. You can use a toilet cleaner along with the brush to thoroughly clean the toilet bowl. Weekly cleaning of the toilet brush itself ensures that it works properly and is protected against germs.

To step

Part 1 of 3: Cleaning the toilet bowl

  1. Pour toilet cleaner into the toilet bowl. Find a toilet cleaner that you consider suitable for yourself and pour the recommended amount into the toilet bowl. You will find this specific amount on the packaging. Leave it alone for a minute or two so it can do its job and clear germs from your toilet.
    • If you find that the ingredients in a cleaning solution are dangerous to you, you can make a natural cleaning solution with white vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice, or essential oils.
  2. Scrub the inside of the pot. Take the toilet brush and thoroughly clean the toilet bowl first. Clean under the rim of the toilet seat, down into the large hole in the toilet, and around the edges of the bowl. Concentrate on scrubbing any smeared areas.
  3. Flush the toilet and rinse the brush. Flush the toilet, and while the water is pouring into the toilet bowl, twist the brush in the water to clean it. Then put the wet brush somewhere to dry.
  4. Keep the toilet brush. Make sure the brush dries before you store it. Put the toilet brush back in its holder and store it in the bathroom, in a storage cupboard, or some other convenient place. Keep it out of reach of any pets or babies as they may try to touch it.

Part 2 of 3: Keeping the toilet clean

  1. Scrub the toilet at least once a week. This weekly maintenance keeps it clean and well maintained. If you find it dirty, feel free to clean it more often.
  2. Wipe the outside of the toilet. Keep the outside of the toilet clean by wiping it with disinfectant wipes. Start at the top to avoid drips on the freshly cleaned surfaces. Wipe the outside of the toilet lid, and don't forget to wipe the toilet seat as well.
  3. Wash your hands. Make sure to wash your hands with soap and water to avoid spreading germs. This should be done after every cleaning.

Part 3 of 3: Disinfecting the brush

  1. Fill a bucket with hot water and add bleach. Add 0.5 l of bleach to the water. Follow the directions on the back of the bottle. For a more environmentally friendly approach, you can add baking soda crystals to the water instead of bleach.
  2. Put the brush in the bucket to soak. Let the brush soak in the bleach for at least one hour. It can take up to four hours, so let him soak some extra time if necessary.
    • If you notice that the brush isn't clean after an hour, you can add more bleach or more crystals. Do not mix in more than an additional 120 ml of each.
  3. Take out the brush and rinse it. Once clean, take the brush out of the bucket and rinse it under hot water. Put the toilet brush back in its holder. The brush should be cleaned at least once a month.
    • Once you're done, don't forget to sanitize the sink or tub you used to rinse the brush.
