Of all hairstyles, the ponytail is the most common. Because of the simple elegance and many practical applications you will find this hairstyle for all ages. Both men and women, and both young and old wear a ponytail. With a little time and practice, you can also master this versatile style.

To step

Method 1 of 4: Create a groomed ponytail

  1. Start with unwashed hair. You can also wear a ponytail with freshly washed hair, but it's easier if your hair hasn't been washed for two or three days - even if you want to achieve an elegant, well-groomed look. Your hair will blow less and the natural grease, created by not being washed for a few days, will ensure that your hairstyle stays in place and your hair shines.
    • Don't be afraid to decide to wear your freshly washed hair in a ponytail anyway: It is still possible to make a groomed ponytail, but you will need to use an additional product to achieve the same result.
  2. Before you start, use a thickening hairspray or a dry shampoo. Spray a bit of this on your hair, focusing on the roots of your hair. This will give you more volume and hold.
    • If you don't have any of these products at home, you can use baby powder as an alternative. Sprinkle a little bit of this on your hand and massage it into your roots. The baby powder will soak up excess oil and add volume and hold.
    • To avoid getting white and gray strands in your tail, it is important that you brush out all the powder well.
    • You can also make your own dry shampoo at home. Follow the link to learn how. You can add some cocoa powder if you want to use it in darker hair. The product darkens a bit - a side effect is that you can suddenly crave chocolate!
  3. Curl your hair. Choose whether you want curls or waves (the latter requires curling your hair in two-inch sections) and use a curling iron. If you treat your hair with some hairspray or gel before using the curling iron, your curls will last longer.
    • Alternatively, you can screw in hot rollers. Do not remove the rollers until they are completely cool.
    • If your hair is longer, you can also do it the other way around; you make a ponytail on top of your head and then twist the rollers into it. You will have to redo your ponytail afterwards, but it is a really quick and efficient way to curl your hair.
    • When your curls (or rollers) have cooled completely, comb loosely with your fingers through your hair. Do not work with a comb or brush, as this will cause the curls to fall out.
    • If your hair dryer has a cold setting, you can use it to cool down your curlers and strengthen your curls.
  4. Tease your hair at the front of your head. Take a section of three inches at the front of your head and gently comb it with a fine-tooth comb. Smooth it out a bit at the front by gently brushing over it.
  5. Another way for a nice style is to turn your head upside down and brush your hair like that. Be careful not to get all the curls and volume out again. Then gather your hair with your hands or a brush to turn it into a beautiful ponytail. For a classic ponytail, place it midway between your crown and the back of your neck, level with the top of your ears.
  6. Secure your ponytail with a rubber band in the color of your hair. And to ensure that no tufts are blown away, spray your hair lightly with hairspray.

Method 2 of 4: Create a side ponytail

  1. Spray or rub some shine serum into your hair. For this style, you want your hair to look soft and shiny, so before you start, apply a little bit of a product that will make your hair shine.
  2. Make a deep side part. See for yourself on which side you want your divorce. In most people, hair naturally falls to one side. If you want a natural look it's best to keep that side, but if you want more volume on top, choose the opposite side to create your tail.
    • A good rule of thumb is to start parting at the highest point of your eyebrow.
  3. To make your ponytail, gather your hair on the opposite side of your part. For example, if you parted your hair on the left side, then make your ponytail on the right side.
  4. Secure your tail low behind your ear with an elastic. You choose the elastic in a color that matches your hair color. You may also want to consider wrapping the elastic with a thin layer of hair (secure the end with a hidden hair clip).
    • It might also be a nice idea to choose a nice ribbon or tie a flower in your elastic.
  5. Put the finishing touches on the i. If you have straight (or almost straight) hair, you can use an iron to make your ponytail even sleeker and shinier. If you have wavy or curly hair, you can use a cream to mold more curls.

Method 3 of 4: Make an "unfinished" ponytail

  1. Take just-out-of-bed her as a starting point. Your hair shouldn't be too neat for this model. As with all other ponytails, it is well suited for unwashed hair. Even if your hair has just been washed, try to keep it looking disheveled or wavy.
    • You can easily get soft, messy wavy hair by braiding your hair, when it is slightly damp, or winding it into a bun and sleeping with it. Of course you have to plan well, but it saves valuable time in the morning and you can make your hairstyle quickly and easily.
  2. Gather your hair on the back of your head, you can use your hands or your brush for this. Then you immediately assure yourself that you do not have large tangles in your hair, but do not brush it too much. Otherwise, that subtle just-out-of-bed look will disappear.
  3. Divide your hair into two equal parts. Then tie the two parts together with a single knot, just like you tie your shoelaces.
  4. Put another two or three knots on it. When you're done with your knots, loosely tie a rubber band around the ponytail.
  5. Slide hair clips at the bottom of the knots in your hair, and pull the elastic out again. You can also leave it in if you're worried that the buttons won't stick, but taking out the rubber band will make it look even more casual and unfinished.
  6. Try making this style with a knotted variation on the side. Part your hair sideways and gather your hair under your ear. Divide your hair into two parts and tie two knots together. Secure the hair directly below the knots with a rubber band.
  7. Ready.

Method 4 of 4: Try variations

  1. Make a ponytail based on the 1950s. Follow steps 1-3 for a neat ponytail. Brush the curls as little as possible after you curl your hair. With this hairstyle, you focus on tight and shiny curls. Secure the ponytail higher on your head. Now you can let the curls hang in spirals, or, once you've made the tail, brush up on the hair to try to wrap it.
  2. Make a ponytail based on the sixties. Follow steps 1-3 for a neat ponytail. Then, in step four, backcomb the top quarter of your hair, adding as much volume as possible. Swipe the teased part of your hair back and make it into a ponytail high on the back of your head (gently smooth the front of this teased part). The bottom part of your hair hangs down. Then gather the rest of your hair and make it into a ponytail too, just below the top ponytail. Pull the ponytail apart in half to pull it up and tighten it a bit. If necessary, make another loop of the elastic around the tail. Take a thin section of hair, wrap it around both ponytails together and secure with a bobby pin.
  3. Try to make a ponytail that is teased and braided. Part the top quarter of your hair and backcomb the bottom. Flip it over and smooth the top; make a ponytail on the back of your head and secure it with a rubber band. Then make a French braid on both sides of your head, braiding towards the back of your head, in the direction of the ponytail on the back of your head. Once you've made both braids, gather all of your hair together into one ponytail.
  4. Try a turned ponytail. You start with a loose ponytail; with this style it is best to create a low ponytail. Reach from the bottom of the ponytail, make an opening in your tail and grab your entire ponytail. Pull it up and through the opening you just made.
    • You can also do this as a half ponytail. Make a ponytail from the top half of your hair and flip it over in the same way as for the turned ponytail. You just let the bottom half of your hair hang loose.
  5. Wear pig tails. Divide your hair into two sections, parting them vertically. Make a ponytail on both sides of your head. You can decide for yourself where you place the pig tails; try low, loose pigtails (low under your ears) or high, tight pigtails (above your ears).
    • Classic pigtails are symmetrical (the same amount of hair on both sides).
    • This playful variation is especially useful for shorter hair that cannot be pulled all the way back.
    • You can keep the part straight and centered, or you could experiment with a more original part, such as a zigzag.
  6. Ready!

Tips

  • You can make the ponytail look more romantic or casual by leaving your bangs out or leaving a few wisps dangling down your face.
  • If you are short on time, style only the front of your hair. While a ponytail is very useful if you don't have a lot of time, consider styling your bangs and the front of your hair and then tucking your hair into a ponytail. You'll have more shine and volume, and tufts that fall out will do exactly what you want (instead of falling out uncontrollably!).
  • If you're curling your hair for your ponytail, consider curling all of your hair if you have the time. As a result, it will eventually look more neat. Plus, if you have to loosen your hair later, all of your hair will dance and curl beautifully. If you don't have time for that, you can also make and secure your ponytail, and then just curl the tail.
  • Finish all these ponytail styles with a little bit of hairspray. Try out different brands and strengths to find the polish that works best for your hair and doesn't make it hard, tacky or heavy. If you overuse it, it can weigh down your hair, pull out the curls and make your hair greasy.
  • Dampen your brush with some water or hairspray if you want your hair to look straight. If you have bangs but want your hair to be slicked back, consider wearing it back with a pair of hairpins or a headband.
  • When doing your ponytail, lean your head back. This gives you more volume and avoids stripes and bumps. If you want to make a really high ponytail, you can hang your head upside down and bring your hair forward. But this won't necessarily give you more volume, and it can be difficult to keep your ponytail in the middle this way.
