iTunes is the media library and sync program designed for iOS devices such as iPhone, iPad and iPod. You can quickly sync your media with your iOS device, using Windows or OS X. Connecting a new device to iTunes allows you to easily add music, movies and other media.

To step

Part 1 of 2: Connecting your device

  1. Make sure iTunes is up to date. If you have an older version of iTunes, the software may not recognize the device. Updating iTunes is free, but requires an internet connection.
    • Windows - Click HelpCheck for Updates
    • OS X - Click iTunesCheck for Updates
  2. Connect your device via USB. Use the USB cable from your iPod, iPad or iPhone to connect it to the USB port on your computer. Plug this directly into your computer; a USB hub is usually not powerful enough.
    • iTunes supports certain other MP3 players other than iOS devices. You may not be able to sync all your music with non-iOS devices.
  3. Set up the device. You may be asked to set up your device when you sign it in to iTunes for the first time. You will get 2 options: "Setup as New" or "Restore from Backup". Even though you used the device before connecting to iTunes, still select "Setup as New". It may seem like everything is being erased, but it's just a question of giving the device a name.
  4. Select your device. The device appears in the left side panel, under the heading "Devices". If you don't see the side panel, click ViewHide Sidebar.
    • If your device is not visible in iTunes, you may need to put it into Recovery Mode.

Part 2 of 2: Syncing your content

  1. Add files to your iTunes library. To add files to your device, you will find them in the iTunes library. You can add music, movies, photos, apps, podcasts, TV broadcasts and books. See elsewhere for more instructions on adding files to an iTunes library.
    • Anything you buy through iTunes will automatically be added to your library.
  2. Choose what you want to sync. Select your device from the sidebar on the left. You will see a row of tabs at the top of the screen for the different types of media you can add to your device. View each tab and select the media you want to add.
    • You can select all files of a certain type of media, or specific files.
    • The available space is shown at the bottom of the screen. As you add files to sync, the bar will fill up.
  3. Start synchronizing. Click the "Summary" tab and then Sync (on the Mac) at the bottom of the window. iTunes will start copying the content you want to sync to your device. Anything on the device that is not checked to be synced will be deleted.
    • You can keep an eye on the progress in the display at the top of the iTunes window.
  4. Unplug the device. When the sync is complete, right click on your device in the left panel and select Eject. This will allow you to safely remove the device. Select your Eject before disconnecting the device, you run the risk of data corruption, although the chances of this are not very high.
  5. Back up your device. iTunes offers the option to back up your iOS device, which is very useful in case something goes wrong in the future. To do this, select the device in the left panel, click the Summary tab, and go to the Backups section. Select where you want the backup to be stored (on your computer or in iCloud), then click Back Up Now.
    • Saving the backup in the iCloud will only store the most important settings. A backup to your computer will result in a full backup.
