The "perfect bun" may seem out of reach, but this simple solution will do the trick. With a clean sock you can create a hip, functional, classic bun.

To step

  1. Choose a sock to make your bun with. It is best to take a sock that you no longer use. The sock should reach your ankle or halfway your calf; if it is longer than that it will accumulate. Shorter socks keep the bun in place better.
    • Get a sock that does not fluff or leave loose threads. You have to cut the sock, so if the sock frayed badly, get another one, or be prepared to finish the edges.
  2. Cut the bottom of the sock with a pair of sharp scissors. Just cut off the toe area.
    • If possible, follow the seam when you cut. Then you have a nicer, straighter line.
    • Carefully remove any loose threads from the section you cut. It has to be very neat, because you don't want strands to get into your hair. Zoom it quickly if necessary.
  3. Put your hair in a ponytail. Wrap the sock around your hand to make it look like a glove and pull it over the ponytail.
    • Pull the sock down towards the base of the tail to create a neat, tight bun.
    • Hold the sock down while pulling your tail up with your other hand.
  4. Tuck the tail in under the sock. This is how you shape the bun. Make sure all the ends of your hair are all the way under the sock to create the bun.
    • Hold the tail by the base and let the ends hang over the sock. Start at the bottom, tucking the ends under the sock, working all the way around the bun.
    • Secure the ends with bobby pins. Use at least one or two pins per section to secure it properly.
  5. Ready.

Tips

  • Use hairspray to finish it off and keep the bun in place. This also curbs loose ends.
  • If you have thicker hair you can use a larger sock, if you have thin hair a smaller sock.
  • Make the bun in front of the mirror where you can also see the back of your head.
  • Use more rubber bands to keep the bun in place.
  • Always have hair clips with you.
  • Choose a sock that matches your hair color. Then people will not notice if a piece of the sock is visible.
  • Make sure the sock is not visible.
  • To tame small stubborn strands, you can put some hairspray on an old toothbrush and comb them in the right direction.
