If your iPod Shuffle is not charged, it will of course be of no use to you. Fortunately, you can easily charge your iPod with your computer or by using an adapter. It only takes a few hours to fully charge iPod Shuffle. Read this article to learn how to charge different generations of iPod Shuffle.

Method 1 of 3: Charging an iPod Shuffle 3rd or 4th generation

1. Check the battery charge. You can check the battery charge first to know how much to recharge your iPod. The battery charge is indicated by a status light. Look at the tips to see what the different colors mean. To check your battery charge, do the following:
   • 4th generation: Double press the VoiceOver button.
   • 3rd generation: Turn iPod Shuffle off and then on again immediately.
2. Charge your iPod with your computer. Connect the supplied USB cable to your computer. Always use a high power USB port. If you connect your iPod shuffle to a port with low power or no power, it will not charge.
   • Plug the other end of the cable into the headphone jack of the iPod.
   • Make sure the computer is on and not in hibernation mode.
3. Charge the battery with a wall outlet. If you have an adapter for your iPod, you can charge your iPod with a power outlet. Then plug the USB cable into the adapter.
   • Plug the other end into the headphone output of your Shuffle.
   • Plug the adapter into the wall socket.
4. Check if the iPod is charging. When the iPod indicator light turns orange, the iPod is charging. Take a look at the tips for a detailed explanation of the meaning of the different colors.

Method 2 of 3: Charging an iPod Shuffle 2nd generation

   • To check the battery charge, turn iPod Shuffle off and then on again, or disconnect the iPod from the computer.

   • To check the battery charge, press the button on the back of the iPod Shuffle.
2. Charges the battery with your computer. Remove the cap from the bottom of the Shuffle. Use the supplied cable to connect the iPod to your computer. Connect the device to a high power USB port. Note that non-powered USB keyboards and USB hubs do not usually have high-powered USB ports. If you connect your iPod shuffle to a port with low power or no power, it will not charge.
   • Make sure the computer is on and not in hibernation mode.
3. Charge the battery with a wall outlet. Plug the USB end of the cable into the adapter.
   • Plug the adapter into the wall socket.

Tips

• It takes about two hours to charge the battery to 80% and it takes about 4 hours to fully charge the iPod.
• If you check the battery charge, you can see how far the battery has been charged by the indicator light. 3rd and 4th generation iPod Shuffles also give you a VoiceOver message. This is what the different colors of the indicator light mean:
  • A solid green status light indicates the device has between 26% to 100% battery charge.
  • A solid amber status light indicates the device has 11% to 25% battery power.
  • A steady red light indicates the device is low on power (1% to 10%).
  • Blinking red light: 1% battery charge or less.
  • No light: empty (0%).

Warnings

• They look the same, but you cannot use a cable that came with an iPod Shuffle 2nd generation to charge an iPod Shuffle 3rd or 4th generation.
• Don't let your computer go to sleep, as most of the time no power goes to the USB ports.
• Connect the USB connector on your iPod shuffle to a high-power USB port on your computer. Note that non-powered USB keyboards and USB hubs do not usually have high-powered USB ports. If you connect your iPod shuffle to a port with low power or no power, it will not charge.
