A headscarf is an easy way to make a fashion statement, keep your hair out of your face, or keep your head warm. You can use a headscarf to cover your entire head when you have run out of hair, or you can just use one if you want a simple hairstyle that doesn't require much work or brushing. You can also wrap scarves as a decorative element and to partially cover your head. If you wear hijab, try different styles to create the perfect look.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Cover your head completely

  1. Make a folded turban for short, long or no hair. If you have long hair, tie it up in a bun or ponytail. Fold a square scarf in half so that you have a large triangle. Place the pointed end at the front as you wrap the flat brim around your head, bringing the two ends forward. Make a "U" shape with one end and insert the other end through the "U", creating a "U" shape on that side as well. Wrap the ends back again. Tie the ends together at the hairline on your neck.
    • To completely cover your hair, you may need to pull up the edges of the triangle in the front and tuck them under the folds of the "turban."
    • Tuck the ends of the fabric under the tight edges of the turban at the back and lay the section on the crown of your head flat, gently pulling it into the knot underneath.
    • Tuck stray hairs that may come out from underneath the headscarf.
  2. Tie the wrap around a bun on top of your head for a fun, elegant look. Start by tying your hair in a bun on top of your head. Wrap one of the long edges of the cloth around the back of your head. Place the rest of the cloth over the top of your head. Pull the back of the kerchief on both sides from the back to the front of your head. When you reach the front, gather the back edge and the rest of the cloth at the top of your forehead. Wrap the cloth around itself to make it a tight, long cord, then wrap the twisted piece around the bun several times.
    • Secure the scarf by tucking the end under another part of the wrapped cloth.
    • You can use a long rectangular cloth for this style.
  3. Gather a cloth at the back of your head with a hair band to create a bun or chignon on the back of your head. Place the center of the long edge over the top of your forehead. Place the rest of the cloth over your head like hair. Pull the long edge and the rest of the cloth taut to hold them together at the back. Pull this through a hair tie to keep it in place (like a ponytail). You can now leave it as it is or make it into a bun and secure with another hair tie.
    • You will need to use a rectangular cloth for this look.
    • This style works great if you have long hair, short hair or no hair!
  4. Wrap a square cloth around your hair and tie it under your chin for a vintage look. Fold a square cloth in half into a triangle. Cover your head loosely with the cloth and place the tip of the triangle at the back of your head. Cover the top of your head with the center of the long brim and draw the ends of the triangle under your chin to tie it down.
    • This definitely gives a 50s feel, and it works for all hair lengths from long hair to no hair.

Method 2 of 3: Attach a decorative cloth

  1. Use a long, thin cloth to make a headband. Wrap the cloth around the front of your hair, starting just behind your hairline. If your cloth is a bit thicker, you may need to bunch it up a bit to form the headband by crimping it widthwise. Bring the ends of the cloth to the back of your neck and tie a knot there.
    • Let the ends hang loose for a fun, elegant style.
    • You can make the headband as wide or as narrow as you want. You can even turn it for a different effect.
  2. Wrap the cloth around your head from front to back for a narrow turban. Use a long, thin cloth. Start with the center of the cloth at the back of your head, halfway between the hairline of your neck and the crown of your hair. Pull the ends forward. Make a "U" shape with one side and pass the other end through the "U", creating a "U" shape on that side as well. Pull the loose part tight and pull the ends backwards again. Secure the cloth with a knot and tuck the ends under the cloth.
    • This look is more 70s than a headband.Wear it over your hair instead of underneath.
  3. Make a bow with a square cloth. Fold the cloth into a triangle. Hold the ends and make a 2-5 cm fold along the entire length of the cloth. Fold it back over itself and continue until you have a long band. Place the center of the band (where the triangle is) at the back of your neck. Pull the ends forward to make a bow on top of your head.
    • You can make the bow in the middle, left or right. It is up to you!
    • You can also use a short, decorative cloth for this style.

Method 3 of 3: Folding a hijab

  1. Create a simple style by wrapping the cloth over your head and around your neck. Start with the center of the long edge of the cloth over your forehead. The rest of the cloth should cover the back of your head. Let the two ends come around the front and hang down. Slip one end over the other and wrap both ends around the back of your head in opposite directions. Bring the ends back to the front to finish.
    • You can tie the ends in a loose knot at the front to secure the wrap.
    • It helps to fold a square wrap in three for a longer, slimmer wrap.
  2. Pin the cloth under your chin so that it stays in place. Place the long edge over your forehead, but arrange the cloth asymmetrically so that one end hangs only slightly below your chin and the other is much longer. Pull the edge of the long end next to the short edge under your chin. Then pin the edges together with a safety pin so that they stay firmly under the chin. Wrap the long brim around your head without twisting it.
    • At this point, you can either continue to wrap the long end around your head and secure it from behind with a safety pin, or tuck part of the brim into the circle around your face, just on the opposite side of your chin, from the direction you are wrapped the cloth.
  3. Wrap the cloth loosely and put it over your shoulder for a simple, casual effect. Place the center of the long edge of the cloth over your forehead. Toss one end over your shoulder and over the end that hangs down in the front. With the end still hanging down, wrap it around itself to make a decorative knot, and you're done!
    • The knot will also help weight down that end of the cloth and hold it in place.

Tips

  • You can use a hair cap (which covers your hair completely) for any of these styles.
