A ponytail is not only practical for keeping your hair out of your face, but can also be a great fashion statement. This guide will walk you through creating a basic ponytail and show you ways to put a trendy twist on a classic hairstyle. Follow these helpful strategies for putting a ponytail in your hair.

Method 1 of 3: Make a basic ponytail

1. Lift your hair to the desired height. If you want a low ponytail, keep your hand near the base of your neck, where your hairline begins. If you want a medium height ponytail, lift your hand up to your ears. For a high ponytail, lift your hand past your ears. Use your free hand to catch any hair that comes loose and put it back in your dominant hand.
2. Add an accent braid to a medium ponytail. Take a few strands of hair and braid them into a thin braid no wider than your finger. Next, gather all of your hair, including the braid, and make it into a medium ponytail, which you secure with an elastic. Wrap a thin strand of hair around the base of your ponytail to keep the elastic band high. Secure this with a hairpin.
   • If your hair is straight and smooth, secure the end of the thin braid with an elastic. Finally, remove the elastic.
   • You can also wrap the thin braid around the base of the ponytail instead. Remove the elastic (if you used one) before securing the braid.

Tips

• Add some accessories to your ponytail.
• If you have a pony, do not include it in the ponytail.
• If there are short strands that won't stay in the ponytail, clip them out of the way with hairpins or pretty hair clips.
• If you can't find hairpins that match your hair color, paint them with a matching nail polish.
• You can add texture to your hair by spraying it with a salt water solution.
