Do you want to open that mysterious closet or were you just unlucky and locked in your friend's bathroom? Here is your escape route. Keep calm and read what follows.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Opening a locked door without a key

  1. Opening a door with a credit card. You can use a credit card with a lock with a spring bolt. This technique does not work for deadbolts, but it does work for spring latches (bolts that are slanted and are part of a door handle). Grab a cheap card or one you don't use anymore - it won't hurt if it breaks. It must be a flexible laminated card.
    • Push the card firmly between the lock and the frame, flush against the frame. Fold it, pushing the lock back into the door and opening the door.
    • If there is no gap between the lock and the frame, you can push the card above the lock between the door and the frame and then quickly slide it down while folding the card in the direction of the frame. A thicker and firmer card can be useful for this.
  2. Try other techniques. Sometimes it is best to put your key aside and use the techniques described below. If that doesn't work, call a locksmith.

Tips

  • If you can open your front door, so can thieves. Use the deadbolt lock if you have this, or replace your lock with a safer one.
  • If you hear or feel the lock open, but the door won't open, there may be a deadbolt on the other side of the door.

Warnings

  • Your behavior will look suspicious. Be prepared for questions and, of course, get permission from the owner before cracking your friend's lock.
