If you've never done it before, it can be quite tricky to use a lighter. Don't worry: you're not the only one who hasn't mastered it yet, and many people who once didn't know anything about strippers are now true fire experts. Be patient, handle the lighter safely and keep practicing until you get it done! Practice makes perfect.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Lighting a lighter

  1. Hold the lighter with your dominant hand. Locate the rotary wheel and ignition button.
    • The turning wheel is made of hardened wire steel. If it is rotated with the necessary force and speed, a spark is created.
    • The ignition button will release gas when pressed. To light the lighter, you will have to turn the wheel and press the ignition button at the same time. Don't worry - this is much easier than it sounds.
    • The ignition button of Bic lighters is made of red plastic and is located on the lighter next to the rotary wheel. The ignition button on Zippo lighters is round and metallic and is located directly below the rotary wheel.
  2. Place your thumb on the spinning wheel. You can use the tip or the side of your thumb - just make sure you can apply enough pressure to spin the jog wheel quickly and then push the ignition button. Make sure the bottom of your thumb is close to the ignition button.
    • Try to find a comfortable grip. Place your thumb in a few different ways to find a comfortable position.
    • Press gently on the jog wheel so that it is pushed against the ignition button and gas is released. Now you just have to provide a spark.
  3. Hold the lighter vertically. Hold it under the item you want to light. However you hold the lighter, the flame will remain vertical and holding the lighter horizontally can burn your hand.
    • Keep your hand away from the flame and the object you want to light. Be careful not to burn yourself.
  4. Use the flame wisely. Fire is a powerful tool and can quickly cause considerable damage. Never light a fire that you cannot put out yourself.
    • Do not start a fire in flammable environments unless you know exactly what you are doing.
    • Only use your lighter in an area with good ventilation. If you smell gas or know there is a leak nearby, you should not light it. Also, do not use your lighter when you are refueling or if you use products that contain flammable gas.
    • Be very careful when lighting a fire in dry areas or meadows, especially in summer. Forest or meadow fires can damage hundreds of square meters of land and when the wind blows the fire can spread very quickly.
  5. Do not leave your lighter on for more than two minutes. Leaving it on for too long will cause the lighter to overheat. This can cause burn marks on both your hands and belongings.
    • Lighters consist of metal and plastic, two substances that conduct heat well. So be careful not to burn your hand.
    • If a lighter gets too hot, it is best to let it cool down before using it again.
  6. Lighters with butane gas do not work very well above a height of 3000 meters. So if you plan to climb high mountains, you better bring matches.
  7. Consider removing the safety lock from a Bic lighter to make it easier to light. Bic lighters have a small metal wire that runs across the center of the spinning wheel. If you have little strength in your fingers, this wire can get in the way. Consider removing it so that you can use the lighter more easily.
    • Turn the wheel until you find a hole in the wire: a point where the metal is not completely attached. Insert a small but sturdy object such as a wrench under the wire and pull it apart. Be careful and protect your eyes - sometimes the wire will suddenly fly off the lighter.
    • The wire is intended to prevent children from using the lighter. If you remove the thread, the turning wheel will turn more easily. Just make sure you keep your lighter away from children.

Warnings

  • To keep the lighter from overheating, it is best not to let it burn for more than two minutes at a time. Then let the lighter cool down for a while and then use it again.
  • Don't play with fire. Do not hold the lighter under anything that could catch fire. Keep the fire away from your face and clothing, and be careful around other people as well.
