Flies can cause many problems, especially when they contaminate food. Although the normal house flies do not bite people, they can spread diseases and germs by laying eggs on food and other surfaces. Eliminate flies by making your own soap traps, making your own fly repellants from cayenne peppers or herbs like peppermint, or buying commercial fly traps. Keep in mind that keeping flies from entering your home is just as important as getting rid of them, so make sure the living space doesn't attract flies to find food and shelter.

Method 1 of 3: Kill flies with home remedies

1. 

   Set up the trap with dish soap. Pour 15 ml of dish soap water and 15 ml of water into the jug. Flies are attracted to the soap and drown in the water.
   • Using a fruity dish soap is best. For example, apple or lemon-flavored soap gives better results.
   • Add 1-2 drops of apple cider vinegar if you haven't caught a lot of flies. The apple cider vinegar will lure the flies into the jar.

   Mix a natural anti-fly mixture in a spray bottle. Flies stay away from the smell of cayenne pepper. Mix some cayenne pepper in water and pour it into a spray bottle.
   • Spray the cayenne pepper mixture at your doorways, windowsills, and other crevices that flies might get into. The smell of chili will keep flies away.

   Planting herbs that repel flies. Flies dislike fragrances like lavender, mint and basil. Design an herb garden in your kitchen or on a windowsill to keep flies away.
   • Use marigold if you prefer flowers to herbs. Marigold also helps to keep flies away.

   Use water-filled plastic bags to trick flies. Plastic bags and water reflect light like a spider web, so flies always try to stay away.
   • Fill 1/2 a clear plastic bag with water. Tie the top of the bag and hang it near doors and windows.
   • Hanging old CDs and DVDs provides a similar reflective effect.

Method 2 of 3: Eliminate flies with commercial fly traps

   Buy fly trap paper. You can buy fly traps at home appliances or supermarkets. Flies will stick to the paper and cannot fly away.
   • Remove fly traps when too many flies are attached. The fly-covered paper is both ineffective and doesn't look appealing to flies.

Method 3 of 3: Prevent flies

1. 

   Seal all garbage. Flies are attracted to trash, especially decaying food.

   Throw out fruits and vegetables that are too long to eat. If possible, keep your vegetables and fruits in the refrigerator instead of on the counter.

   Sanitize floors, counters and other surfaces. Make sure not to leave debris and water spilled.

• Have a flyswatter racket available. Sometimes you can easily use a racket to smash flies.

• Use insecticide with care. Insecticides can be harmful to people and pets. Try using as many non-toxic ingredients as possible before trying any poison or chemicals.
